Athea GAA

U21’s:

The U21s will play Clann na nGael this weekend in the West A semi-final.

Players Meeting:

An important meeting of all players will be held in the Clubhouse on Friday night, November 10th at 8pm. It is vital that all players attend.

AGM:

The AGM of Athea GAA will take place on December 3rd at 6pm (check time nearer to the date). Everyone is welcome to come along, especially students and young players. Membership will be taken up on the night. And it’s a real good  time to become a member with everything that’s going on up at the pitch. And you never know what next improvements will be on the horizon, up at the pitch, which indeed has come a long way over the past few years.

It is hoped that we will have the “grand opening” of the pitch in 2018 which indeed should be a great day. The committee are looking for ideas for same as well as fund-raisers for 2018 (without having to go to business people again). We were thinking “a battle of the townlands” would go down well! Would Upper Athea have more talent than Lower Athea or vice-versa. Or Glenagragra v Gortnagross – there could be some great rivalry, but great fun. Have you any ideas out there, if so bring them to the AGM or any of the committee. It would shorten the winter to have an event to look forward to in 2018.

Best 15:The attempts to pick a best 15 since 1982 is proving a lot more difficult than anticipated, having reviewed the successful teams up to 1997 we have named a wealth of talented footballers and there is massive debate in the parish about what the makeup of the team should be, there seems to be some agreement on about five places but after that there are many possibilities. It is starting to look like a near impossible task to narrow it down to just 15 from all the great players, to represent Athea with distinction.

We will now look at the years after 1997 up to 2002. The celebrations, some injuries and retirements slowed our progress in 1998 and 1999, but as before a west u21 title under the management of Pat Higgins in 1999, (Tom Collins, Knocknagorna was the star performer, gave new impetus in the drive to win the Intermediate and go Senior. We also reached the west senior final that year for the first time, but lost to Fr Casey’s. In 2001 we reached the county Intermediate final but lost by the minimum to a strong Adare Team. In 2002 we were back in the Intermediate final, under Noel Barry and the team gave an exhibition of football, none more so than 17 year old Gerard Ahern, who tormented various defenders with his scoring exploits, to defeat Galbally in a glorious September day in Kilmallock. The panel that day included Tom Stackpoole, Martin Chawke, Philip Woulfe, Mike Ahern, Paul Collins, Joe Vaughan, Tomas Mullane, Neilus Hunt, Denis Collins, Gerard Ahern, Jamie Collins, Declan White, John Cotter, Patrick Ahern, Sean Ahern, Leo Collins, John Hunt, Richard Fitzgerald, Roger Ryan, Brian McKenna, Mike Reidy, Tim Quaid, Brian Ahern and there may have been more players on the panel but I can’t find a match programme. There was great relief after that County final, as the panel of players and the club felt they were good enough to be playing Senior Football, and had at last achieved that goal.
