Saint Kieran’s Heritage Association is publishing a 2018 Heritage Calendar as a fundraiser for the Ardagh Chalice 150 Anniversary events to be held next September. It is open to the pupils of the four local primary schools, and the following rules apply Print the photos you wish to enter, and write your name and school on the back of the photo, and give them to your teacher.

September will be dedicated to the Ardagh Chalice and will feature a picture of the Ardagh Chalice Hoard. The other 11 months will feature the following categories: flora, fauna, buildings, weather, sport, farming, people, history culture, religion, and art. The first prize will be a €50 Game Shop Voucher, and if your picture features on the calendar you will receive a prize. The entries have been slow to date; school commitments, hurricanes, and storms have put a damper on things no doubt. This is a final call for entries as the printer’s deadline approaches to enable the calendar to be in the shops for mid November. With the Halloween midterm break upon us it will give all the budding photographers a chance to get out and take pictures that will do justice to the heritage that is to be found within the catchment area of the Association, so get snapping.

Due to public demand the Lip Sync main event is now extended to two nights at the Devon Inn Hotel Friday November 10, and Saturday November 11, commencing at 8pm sharp. The participants who are the real stars of the show have put in countless hours practising their moves, over the past month. Practise nights have ran into the early hours of the morning, and many groups have been practising a number of extra nights to hone their skills to perfection. It will be fast paced and competitive, with all the acts putting their best foot forward to catch the eye of the judging panel. The same show will run for over three hours, and there will be a winner announced on each night. A raffle will be held on both nights for numerous spot prizes, and a show programme will also be available. The tickets for Friday November 10 will be on sale this week in local outlets, and from committee members, and they cost €20 each. This will give members of the wider community an opportunity of seeing the show, which would be denied to them if it was staged only on Saturday November 11.

Athea GAA

Thanks:

Athea GAA are extremely grateful to the Kiely Bros of Birmingham – (who were originally from Glenagower) and who recently gave sponsorship to the club. The company, who are involved in road maintenance and waste disposal, have done well for themselves and wanted to give to the GAA for their good fortune. Indeed a very nice gesture – well done.

Incidentally if anyone would like to sponsor an advertising plaque for the pitch or parking area, the club would be delighted to assist them with details.

U21s:

Unfortunately the U21s game which was to be played on Saturday evening last against St. Senan’s in Ballyhahill had to be cancelled due to the very stormy weather. Details of the re-scheduled game in the near future.

Track:

The walking/running track is being used quite a bit these days with the roads and grass being so wet, it is also so much safer with no traffic and ideal for kids and young people getting their exercise.

Journal:

Make sure and get all your photos and bits and pieces of news items for the Journal GAA section into the printers here in Athea in the next week or so.

Fixture:

Saturday October 28:

U21:

Athea/Mountcollins Rangers will play St. Senans this Saturday October 28 in Ballyhahill at 4pm. All support would be greatly appreciated.

Card Game:

The GAA Monday night 41 card game is on next Monday October 30 at the Top of the Town, all card players welcome for a fun night. The game starts at 9pm and will be finished for 11p.m. The game is 2 x 3s, bring a team or come on your own and we will have partners for you, cash prizes.

Best 15 since ’82:
There is a lot of interest in the possible make up of this team, and to answer one query, Conor Mullane who was a youthful fullback on the 1968, senior winning team is eligible for selection as he was also Full back on the 1982 West Junior winning team. We recently got as far as 1991 and the trilogy with Rathkeale in Newcastle west and Tournafulla, after which the Junior team struggled for a few years, but a flock of young lads were starting to emerge from the Coiste na nÓg ranks, to bring the club to new heights. These boys won the west U21 B championship in 1994 and 1995, The County U21B in 1995 and the West U21 A Championship against a star studded Glin team after two epic battles in Ballyhahill, having easily disposed of Newcastle West and Abbeyfeale along the way. They defeated Oola, again after a replay in the county semi final. The County U21 A final against Ballylanders also ended in a draw, but we lost the replay in Ballingarry. This group of players went on to back bone the Junior team in 1997 who won the West and County Junior Championship, our first County Championship win since ’68. The final was played in Abbeyfeale on the 14th of December, which was the second replay after two drawn games in Tournafulla against a Dromcollogher/Broadford team who were about to embark on their own journey into the history books. The third and final game, which also went to extra time was witnessed by one of the biggest crowds ever to attend a club football match in Limerick, supporters travelling from all corners of the county as well as North Kerry and North Cork. They definitely got value for money as the game was in the melting pot until the final minute, when John Cotter scored the winning goal.

A lot of the players on this panel will be pushing hard for a place on the best 15, especially Tom Stackpoole and John McAuliffe who also played starring roles in the 1982, 1987 and 1989 West winning teams. The rest of the panel was Benny Collins, R.I.P. Pat O’Connor, Nelius Hunt, Donal Woulfe, Timmy Reidy, Henry Scanlon, Patrick Ahern, Denis Collins, Teddy Mulvihill, Philip Woulfe, Gary O’Keeffe, Tim Quaid, Sean Ahern, Seamus Ahern, Declan White, Michael Ahern, Mike Hayes, Brian Ahern, Brian Hanrahan, John Hunt, John Cotter and Tadhg Hanrahan.
Next on the list is The County Intermediate winning team on 2002 and County senior finalists in 2003.

Coiste na nÓg:

Upcoming Fundraisers:

We will be holding a Donkey Derby in November and our Annual Table Quiz in December. All support for both events would be greatly appreciated. More details to follow in the coming weeks.
