History:
Jamie Kelly of Clash is presently looking back on GAA news and articles from years gone by, in the hope of compiling an Athea GAA history book. He has also delved into stories from long ago and it’s surprising what has come up. Hopefully, in the not too distant future, all the information collected by Jamie will be put into book form.
GAA Track:
Well with the evenings getting darker much earlier, it’s great to have the walking/running track up at the pitch. In the near future it is hoped that lights will be going up all along the track, which indeed will be a great asset to everyone.
Fund Raising:
Well with the winter months ‘on the horizon’ the club are asking for ideas for fund raising to further reduce the €40,000 approx debt on the magnificent pitch and facilities. Ideas have come in such as ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ – a Barn Dance – Battle of the parishes – a parish Lip-Sync – a celebrity County & Western singer. Maybe others have more ideas so if you have the club would be delighted to have them, so that maybe whatever is decided that it could be held early in 2018.

Matches:
Saturday September 2
U12s:
Our U12s took part in the finals day blitz on Saturday morning last in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale. We met a strong Cappamore team in the first match and we found it hard to get scores. In the second match we played Cappagh and despite a great performance we came up short on the day. All the boys did their very best, Tomas Ahern was fantastic in goals and we got some wonderful scores in this match especially the goal scored by Michael Walsh in the first half. I would like everyone who travelled to Mick Neville Park on the day and to Limerick Coaching and Games for their great organization on the day. Panel: Timmy O’Keeffe, Tomas Ahern, Donnchadh Barrett, James Lee, James Hunt, Calum Gleeson, Evan Curry, James Broderick, Michael Walsh, Callum O’Mahony, Rory Cleary, Rory O’Mahony, Ciaran Hunt, Tadhg Ahern and Fionn Histon.
Monday September 4:
U14
Athea 4–11 Monaleen 1–5
Our boys played very well in this County semi-final in Athea last Monday night. The score line is a bit unfair on the opposition as they had a lot of possession but were a bit wayward in their shooting. We started well and some early scores settled us as we took the game to the opposition. At half time we led 3-7 to 0-4, the second half was more even but we defended very well, none more so than Gavin Ambrose at full back and Gearoid O’ Sullivan in goals who even saved a penalty. We now play Galtee Gaels (Kilbeheny/Anglesboro) in the county final. They had a big win over Granagh/Ballingarry in their semifinal.
Team: Gearoid O’ Sullivan, Fergal Pierse, Gavin Ambrose, Conor Mullane, Dermot Pierse, Andrew O’ Riordan, Brandon Finucane, Michael Tierney, Eoin O’ Shea, Paraic Enright, Daire O’ Shea, Michael Walsh, T.J. Hunt, Pierce O’ Brien and Cillian O’ Connor, Subs James Lee, James Broderick and Evan Curry.
