Athea GAA

500 Club Draw:

Well next Saturday night sees the 4th leg of this year’s ‘500 GAA Club draw’ taking place at Donie Lyons’. If you still aren’t in the draw you can still buy a ticket from any member of the committee. Who knows you may be lucky.

Gym:

It’s great that the gym equipment has been delivered to the Clubhouse at Páirc na nGael. The U/21s will be making full use of it for their forthcoming games and no doubt it should be very beneficial to the teams.

Support:

It was great to see the immense amount of support for the U/14 boys who played on Saturday last in the Shield Co. Final against Galtee Gaels in Rathkeale. Despite the very wild stormy conditions parents and supporters came out to encourage these young players and that was great to see.

U/21s:

Medals will be given out at 9pm on this Friday night to the U/21 team at Donie Lyons’ Bar. The team won the West U/21  A Championship. Unfortunately they were beaten by Tory Gaels in the Co. semi-final. Well done to them however for making it to the championship.

Coiste na nÓg:

U14 County Final:

Athea 0-05 Galtee Gaels 2-06

Our gallant U14s were defeated in the County final in Mick Neville Park on Saturday last before a large crowd of supporters. A gale force wind blowing from end to end made football very difficult. We played against the wind in the first half and despite some excellent defending from Gavin Ambrose, Andrew O’ Riordan, Eoin O’ Shea and Goal keeper Gearoid O’ Sullivan who made two excellent saves; we trailed at half time 2-6 to 0-1.  With the strength of the wind to favor us in the second half, hopes were high that victory could still be ours. The players including all four subs, put in a mighty effort and despite holding Galtee Gaels scoreless for this half, we could not get enough scores to really trouble the opposition. At the full time whistle the score read 2-6 to 0-5. The players were very disappointed afterwards but they are a dedicated bunch of footballers and if they stick together they will have plenty of success in the years ahead. The club treated the players to pizza, chicken and chips etc in the club house when we returned to Athea. Thanks to our secretary, Jacqueline O’ Connor for organizing this.  On behalf of the team management, I would like to thank the parents for their support throughout the year, as without encouragement at home it is hard for the players to excel. Panel: Gearoid O’ Sullivan, Conor Mullane, Gavin Ambrose, Dermot Pierse, Fergal Pierse, Andrew O’ Riordan, Brandon Finucane, Michael Tierney, Eoin O’ Shea, TJ Hunt, Pierce O’ Brien, Paraic Enright, Michael Walsh, Daire O’ Shea, Cillian O’ Connor, James Broderick, Callum Buckley, Evan Curry and James Lee

Fixtures for October:

U8s:

Our U8s will take part in the Feohanagh/Castlemahon Nigel Bucke tournament in Coolyroe this Sunday October 1. Cars leaving the village at 3pm. All Players must have Gumshields.

U16 County Final:

Our U16s will play Dromcollogher/Broadford in the Cup County final. Date, time and venue to be confirmed. All support would be greatly appreciated.

A text will be sent out to all parents regarding the training times for all age groups for this week.
