16s MAKE SOLID START

U16 Division 2 (Sat, August 26th)

Newcastle West Town A (1) 1

Athea Utd (2) 4

Conor Hogan (2), Thomas McEnery, Brandon Finucane

Athea Utd U16s kicked off their season with a 4-1 away win over newly formed Newcastle West Town B in The Demense last Saturday. This was our first competitive game against this opposition and we didn’t know what to expect.

The game started even enough, as always, teams trying to weigh each other up in the first ten mins. Our midfield where holding their own, with our new boy Conor Hogan on the right of midfield, Andrew O’Riordan in the centre winning everything in the air and Eoin O’Shea on the left tormenting their defence with his pace. We opened the scoring on twenty minutes with a goal from Conor Hogan after great interlink play between Eoin O’Shea and Brandon Finucane on the left wing. The game was still ebbing and flowing when we got a break and Thomas McEnery scored a great individual goal. The home side started to put on the pressure and just before half time where rewarded with a goal.

In the second half we had to make a few changes with our influential defender Gavin Ambrose having to come off injured. Town started the second half stronger and we were on the back foot and for the most part they owned the second half, but in fairness to our lads they stayed strong. TJ Hunt and Shane Scanlon put in a shift in the backs.
Michael Tierney was in goals for us in this match and played a
blinder, and Michael set up our third goal from  a long kick out that a determined Brandon Finucane latched onto to score our third, which was against the run of play, and just before full time great work from Pierce O’Brien and Jack Hunt who set up Conor Hogan for our fourth goal and his second of the game.

Over all a good victory for our first game, well done to all the boys, and also to mention Paric Enright, David McEnery and Daire O’Shea who did great service when called upon.
