BIG NUMBERS AGAIN AT SOCCER CAMP

The FAI Summer Soccer School, hosted by Athea Utd AFC at The Vales last week was another outstanding success. We had 90 children attending the camp thus proving the growth and popularity of soccer in the country.

Head Coach was Dayle Danaher and the coaches at the camp were Sean Ryan, Rebecca McGuinness, Dean Maune, Dyon Keane, Michael Keane and Leanne Forde with Tagh McEvoy  a coaches assistant. On behalf of Athea Utd like to thank Dayle and all the coaches who looked after all the children last week who did their job in a very professional manner.

All the children received a full kit, backpack and football as well as learning skills and making new friends as well.

Looking forward to the 2018 soccer camp.

NOTE – Thanks also to Ned and Mike who had The Vales in splendid condition for the duration of the camp.

Páirc na nGael:

Once again many hands gave of their time to yet again improve the look of the pitch. On Saturday last Pat O’Sullivan and Derek Byrne must be complimented for the brilliant job the did in lining the pitch. It’s now looking fabulous.

Also on Saturday Eddie Barrett and Aidan Curry erected the ‘hippi’ fence – Paul Curry (Chairman) has nick-named them “Chubb and Lanking Fencing”. In all a great day’s work by everyone – well done.

Collection:

The club extends so many thanks to everyone who gave so generously to their annual church gate collection at the weekend – it was much appreciated and it’s with all your help that Páirc na nGael and Athea GAA is thriving! You can be proud.

Wednesday July 26:

U14s:

Athea 4–15     Mungret St. Pauls 2–02
The U14s had another good win away to Mungret St. Pauls B on Wednesday last, July 24th. We found it hard to get going in the first half with Mungret St. Pauls posing lots of problems, good displays from Gavin Ambrose, Gearoid O’Sullivan and Pierce O’Brien kept their forwards at bay, so we still led at half time 0–6 to 1–1. The first fifteen minutes of the second half was our best for a while with Eoin O’Shea, Michael Tierney, Andrew O’Riordan and Brandon Finucane taking complete control, we built up an unassailable lead. Final score 4–15 to 2–2.  Our next league game is at home to Claughaun on Wednesday August 9th at 7pm. We hope to play Tarbert in a challenge match this Thursday in Tarbert.
Team: Gavin Mulvihill, Gearoid O’Sullivan, Gavin Ambrose, Fergal Pierse, Dermot Pierse, Andrew O’Riordan, Pierce O’Brien, Michael Tierney, Eoin O’Shea, Paraic Enright, Brandon Finucane, Michael Walsh, James Broderick, T.J. Hunt, Cillian O’Connor, James Lee and Evan Curry.
One of the stars of the Mungret Team was 11 year old Muiris Ahern, son of former Athea Senior star, Sean Ahern, Garrygloss (still playing Junior B with Athea) and Grandson of Mossie and Nellie Ahern, Garrygloss.

Thursday July 27:

U12s:

Athea 5–06     Mountcollins 2–03
Athea were away to Mountcollins on Thursday evening last with a bare team. In the first half Mountcollins were playing with a strong breeze which left the score at half time Mountcollins 2-03 to Athea 1-00. In the second half the Athea team played some great football and outscored Mountcollins by twelve points. It was a great team effort from each of the Athea players well done to both teams; football was the winner on the night. Final score Athea 5-06 Mountcollins 2-03.Team: Tomas Ahern, Donnchadh Barrett, Timmy O Keeffe, James Hunt, James Lee, Callum Buckley, Evan Curry, James Broderick, Tadhg Ahern, Michael Walsh and Rory O’Mahony.
