Ardagh Community First Responders was launched in the Community Centre on Monday July 17 and is now available to give assistance. The contact number for this valuable service is 083 8889963. The hours the responders are available are 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday and from 7pm Friday to 7am Monday. The Defibrillators are located at Saint Molua’s Church and the School Community field in Ardagh, Saint Kieran’s GAA ground in Coolcappa, Kilcolman National School and Shanid Mantels in Old Mill. Since the start of the year over 30 volunteers have trained in basic CPR, and basic Defibrillator training registered with the Irish Heart Foundation. They can now provide assistance and support in case of a medical emergency while awaiting the arrival of the medics. The responders can give assistance in the event of heart attack collapse stroke and choking.
The following are the Lottery results from Moore’s Bar, Carrigkerry on Monday July 17. The numbers drawn were 19,20,24, and 29 and there was no Jackpot winner. Congratulations to the five lucky dip winners who won €40 each: Mary O’Connor, Coolanoran, Ardagh, Jack Flaherty, Carrigkerry, Teresa Flavin, Listowel, Breda Foley, Ardagh, and Tom Corrigan, Askeaton. Next week’s Jackpot will be €5,400 and the draw will be held at Peadar’s Bar Ardagh.

Father Seamus Power, who is a resident in the Park Nursing Home, Castletroy Limerick, was pictured at their summer barbecue in the Limerick Post two weeks ago. He served as Parish Priest in Ardagh/Carrigkerry from 1984 to 1993. He oversaw major renovations in Ardagh and Carrigkerry churches, Parochial and curate’s houses, during his nine years. He will always remember with gratitude the people for their friendship and co-operation. He described his time in the parish as a very happy and memorable period of his priestly life. The faith of the people was an inspiration as their devotion to their spiritual duties demonstrated.
Saint Kieran’s participated in the second annual Limerick Big Ball Club Sevens Tournament at Mick Neville Park Rathkeale on Saturday July 15. It is promoted by the Rathkeale club to honour the achievements of former player and referee Shane Hourigan, and numerous teams participated. Saint Kierans won their group defeating Kildimo/ Pallaskenry 3-5 to3-3, Ballylanders 7-9 to 1-4, and Ballysteen 1-8 to 0-8 to advance to the quarter final. They defeated Gerald Griffins by 3-11 to 2-10 to progress to the semi-final where they lost out to surprise team Kildimo/Pallaskenry by 2-8 to 1-5. Newcastle West were the outright winners of the Tournament. Saint Kieran’s lost to Saint Senan’s by 2-15 to 2-4 in the West Junior B Football Championship played in Ballyhahill on Sunday July 16. Saint Kieran’s competed in Group 1 of Division 5 of the County Hurling League this year. They played Tournafulla, who finished top Crecora/Manister, Askeaton, and Adare, and finished fourth on two points.
Saint Kieran’s play Na Piarsaigh in Round 4 of the County Intermediate Hurling Championship at Croagh on Sunday July 30 at 7pm. A win would move them into the top half of their group, and in contention for a Quarter final place.
John Hayes, son of Catherine and Denis, Knockfinisk, is currently a member of the Kerry U-17 team who are participating in the SSE Airtricity U-17 Soccer League. He scored in their recent match against Galway United. John began his career with Carrig Celtic, and he has also enjoyed success with the Desmond League side in recent years.
West Limerick 102 community Radio are holding a 50/50 draw at present. The tickets cost €2 and are available in local shops, and from the Station. This will be a weekly fundraiser for the Radio, and the draw will be held live on air each Friday at 12.45pm. The winning ticket holder receives half of the money collected that week and the Radio Station receives the other half. The latest winner was Nicole Hough, Rathkeale and she won €454. All support weekly to keep the station on air will be greatly appreciated.
Saint Kieran’s Heritage Association held a brief committee meeting on Monday July 17 with the following results. The Association have plans to mark Culture Night with an event in Saint Molua’s’ Hall Ardagh on Friday September 22. It is hoped to arrange a visit to the Museum in Dublin to see the Ardagh Chalice also that month. The children’s art depicting the Fenian Rising from last March is due to go on display in Newcastle West Library. The above will be on the agenda for the next meeting of the Association which will be held In Neary’s Ardagh on Thursday September 7 at 8.80pm, and all members are asked to attend and new members will be most welcome.
Desmond Credit Union Newcastle West are marking 45 years in business, serving the local community and this Thursday July 27 they are celebrating at their office in South Quay with music cash prizes to be won and refreshments on offer. It has been a great success story along the way and I am delighted to say that I have been a member for 43 of those. A number of local people have given of their time in a voluntarily capacity over the years as cashiers and officers, and a sub branch operated in Ardagh village in the early years. Over the last 12 months the Credit Union have sponsored €6,500 to local clubs and charity events, including Ardagh Community Centre and Carrigkerry National School. People are invited to attend on Thursday during opening hours from 9.30am to 4pm, to enjoy the celebrations.
The Shoestring Theatre Company summer season at the Schoolyard Theatre Charleville is ongoing at present. Their production of the Real Mc Coy is running at present and it is receiving a wonderful response. Two founding members of Ardagh Drama group are playing key roles in the laugh a second play written by Tommy Marren. Eilish Casey plays Madge Molloy the lady of the house, and Ger Liston plays husband Tom Molloy. The play is set over a two day period in a rural farmhouse in the 1960s, and the hilarious mishaps and surprising events that take place. Our Lady’s Pastoral Area has organised a pilgrimage to Clonmacnoise County Offaly and Saint Mel’s Cathedral Longford on Saturday July 29. Limerick City and County Council have announced the following 24 hour temporary closure of roads L6070 at Dunmoylan, Shanagolden, to construct a Cattle Underpass, from 8am on Monday July 31 to 5pm on Friday August 4. The L6070 road will be closed from its junction with Kilcolman village to junction with L1219. Traffic may divert via L1219, R521, and L 6071, and local traffic will be accommodated and diversions will be clearly signposted.
Carrigkerry are holding a turf futtin festival this week end from Thursday July 27 to Sunday July 30. An action packed programme of events have been put in place to cater for all sections of the community. On Friday night a local talent show will be held in the Community Centre from 8pm. On Saturday a Sport’s Day will be held at Carrig Celtic club grounds from 1pm, plus a car boot sale. A male and female bartenders race will be held on the street from 7pm, with registration required by contacting Pa at Moore’s Bar at 069-76155. On Sunday a Bog Walk will take place departing from the Community Centre at 2pm, and refreshments will be served on return. The main event the Turf Futtin Competition will be held in Moore’s Bar car park from 5pm, with male/ female coronation at 9pm. A funfair will be in attendance during the festival and entertainment at Moore’s Bar over the week end.
