Saint Kieran’s defeated Saint Patrick’s by 2-9 to 1-7 in Round 3 of Group 2 of the County Senior Football Championship at Ballybrown Gaelic grounds on Friday June 16. On a sunny warm evening  Saint Kieran’s playing with the fall of the field dominated the opening exchanges, and had five kicks at the target. Noel Callanan from play opened their account with a point following good approach play. Darragh Treacy kicked their second in the eight minute, after three wides. Saint Patricks responded with three points in succession to lead by 3points to two after the opening quarter.

Sean McSweeney  from a close range free and a 45 won by Noel Callanan, edged  Saint Kieran’s ahead by the 20th minute. They hit a purple patch in the closing five minutes, kicking 2-1 to lead by 2-5 to 0-3 at the break. Darragh Treacy set up Paudie McCarthy for their fifth point in the 25th minute. Sean Mc Sweeney crashed a close range free won by Donie Nolan to the top right corner of the net on 27.  A neat pass from Brendan McCarthy found Darragh Treacy who waltzed past his opponent to fire the ball low to the left hand corner for a fine goal just before the short whistle.

Darragh from a free won by Brian Crowley on seven and Paudie McCarthy from play left Kieran’s  ten points ahead after eight minutes of the second half. Their opponents scored a goal after 16 and a point after 21 to reduce the lead. Brian Crowley from play on 25 and Sean McSweeney from a free won by Seamus Mangan on 29 edged them eight ahead. Saint Patrick’s scored three points in injury time to conclude the scoring. A well deserved win and a good all round team display to move into contention for a playoff place with matches against Ballysteen, and Newcastle West to come. A worry would be their finishing as they kicked 14 wides after good approach play.
