County Intermediate Football Championship:
Round 1 (Group 2) of the Co. Intermediate football championship was played on Friday evening last 21st April at 7pm in Tournafulla. (Venue was changed from Mountcollins). Johnathan Hayes was the referee for the occasion.
Athea lined out against Castlemahon on this occasion. This, is was hoped, would be a good start to the Championship after a disappointing game against Gerald Griffins recently.
The first half was a bit slow off the mark for Athea, however, goals from James Ryan & Kevin Murphy brought us back to leave Athea level with the opposition at half time.
This was a game of two halves and the second half was brilliant for Athea yielding 10pts. The final score was (2-12) to (0-13) with Athea the victors on this occasion.

Club Draw:
The ‘500’ Club draw will be starting up again shortly. This draw is the “mainstay” of the club and once again your support , as always, would be greatly appreciated. Ticket sellers will go house to house but if you’re not home and would like to be in with a chance to win one of the great monthly prizes – you can contact any of the GAA committee. Also if you would like to help to sell the tickets it would be great, especially if you are an Athea team member – it’s vital that everyone helps to reduce the debt on your club.
We have a pitch, walking/running track, clubhouse etc that Athea can be very proud of – ‘so get behind Athea GAA and lend a hand in one way ore another by buying or selling’.

Match:
Monday April 24:
U16s:
Our U16s got off to a winning start when they defeated South Liberties by three points in Dooley Park on Monday evening last. Andrew O’ Riordan opened the scoring with a great goal following a pass from John Sexton. Shortly after the home side equalized and added a point to take the lead. The sides were level again when John Sexton pointed a free. We increased our lead with another free this time from the boot of David O’ Connor. With ten minutes to go to the break, Jack O’ Connor burst up the middle, passed the ball to Evan Wallace whose shot was brilliantly blocked down, but Jack was quickest to react and scored Athea’s second goal. The home side came back and scored three unanswered points to leave the score at half time, Athea 2-02, South Liberties 1-04. At the start of the second half the sides were level as South Liberties got the opening point. A second pointed free from David O’Connor edged us in front. Ten minutes into the half, South Liberties got a goal to take a two point lead. Jack O’Connor reduced the lead to a point when he tapped the ball over the bar, but the home side restored their two point advantage when they scored a point of their own. Our boys kept their heads and a long ball in by Michael Tierney broke inside in the square and Gavin Ambrose made no mistake and finished it to the back of the net. Just before the final whistle, two great points from John Sexton left the final score Athea 3-06, South Liberties 2-06. Overall this was a great team performance and they will now be taking a break from matches till after the exams. Team: Colin Broderick, Eoin Sheahan, Alex McEldowney, Brandon Finucane, Thomas McEnery, Jamie O’Mahony, David O’Connor, Aidan Curry, John Sexton, Jack Hunt, Jack O’Connor, Luke Gleeson, Evan Wallace, Andrew O’Riordan, Michael Tierney. Subs: Gavin Ambrose and Padraig McMahon.
