Athea GAA
West Intermediate Championship:
Our intermediate team were victorious over Abbeyfeale Intermediates in a thrilling game which produced a very positive performance. It was great to see such a great deal of support with cars parked for a great distance on both sides of the pitch. Patrick Aherne and Kevin Murphy scored the goals for the home side, while the points were shared between Michael Reidy, Mark Reidy, Pa Ahern and Kevin Murphy.
Team: Ger Collins, Padraig Reidy, Matthew Tierney, Ray Brouder, Tommy Quaid, Denis Greaney, Shane Tierney, Michael Reidy, Jason Kelly, Darren Murphy, Pa Ahern, Neilo Keane, Kevin Murphy, Mark Reidy, James Ryan. Subs used: Sean Ryan, Padraig Walsh & William Mullane.
Improvements:
At a recent committee meeting several suggestions were made with regard to the pitch and surrounding area. It is hoped now with the weather improving that a good deal of work will be accomplished. The dug-outs, it is hoped, will be the next thing on the horizon, also the area outside the dressing rooms and kitchen, which is very wet always, will in the not too distant future be covered in ready-mix concrete. Lights on the running track also are an idea waiting to be sorted. In all the pitch and track are constantly being improved and will be one of the best in the area when completed and a great asset especially to our youth.
Under Age:
Have all underage players been registered ? It’s €30 for the whole season for 1 child, €50 for a family and €20 for any newcomers (bring birth cert). This is a small amount really for a whole season of fun-filled football, training and matches – making good friendships, taking discipline orders and much more and it keeps the young people off the streets and maybe getting into trouble and as well as all that getting fit is a vital element now, with all the obesity etc that’s being recognised in young kids.
Cards:
The final GAA card game for this season is on at the Top of the Town on Monday next, April 10th at 9pm. with some extra prizes on offer.
There were joint winners of the card game at the Top of the Town on Monday night April 3rd with 13 games. Christina O’Donoghue, Paddy Enright and John Scanlon tied with Patsy Hartnett, Ger Murphy and Eileen Murphy. The table prize winners were Mike O’Connor and John Hunt. Raffle winners were Mary Holland, Siobhán Barrett.
A big thank you to all those who supported it since we started back in October, hopefully you all enjoyed the games, especially the nights you got good cards.

The U14 footballers had a good game against Shannon Gaels (Glin/Gerald Griffins) in Glin on Friday night last. Both teams served up a very exciting game for their supporters, made up mainly of parents and girlfriends who did lots of cheering
