Desmond Cup 1st Round (Sunday, Feb 5th)
Killeaney (1) 1
Athea Utd (1) 2 own goal, Gerard Ahern (pen)
We made the short journey to Knockdown for the first round of this seasons Desmond Cup. Conditions looked like they would be tough before kick-off but it cleared and ended up being perfect conditions for a cup tie. We started slow but steadily got into sync in midfield with Jamie Collins and Gerard Collins finding a lot of room in the engine room. They were aided by the hard work on the wings by both Stephen McEnery and Ronan Hayes. Stephen linked well with Gerard Ahern and Kevin Murphy up front, creating the best of our chances. We created a few good chances but found very little luck. This would totally change as our first goal came by way of an own goal from a Gerard Ahern corner. At the other end a brilliant Padraig Reidy tackle ensured we held our lead going into half time.
The aim was to continue in the second half as we had played in the first and this what we did by and large. However a poor middle period of the second half cost us as Killeaney equalized despite the best efforts of the very solid Cillian O Connor, the keeper beaten by a fortuitous strike that came down with a ‘bit of snow’ on it. We stuck to our task however and regained our composure. A brilliant run from Gerard Ahern resulted in him being taken down for a clear cut penalty which he despatched to the roof of the net. We were back in front and it was a lead that we held to the final whistle.
Team. Cillian O’Connor, Matthew Tierney, Padraig Reidy, Joe Vaughan, Michael Reidy, Ronan Hayes, Jamie Collins, Ger Collins, Stephen McEnery, Gerard Ahern, Kevin Murphy.
