Match:

West U21 A Football Final:

Saturday December 3rd:

Athea/Mountcollins Ranger 0-14      St. Senans 0-13

Athea/Mountcollins Rangers were crowned U21 West A Champions after a thrilling encounter with St. Senans in Mick Neville Park on Saturday night last. St. Senans raced into a two point lead with three minutes gone on the clock, but a point each from Stephen Cahill and James Ryan had the sides level again. James Ryan got on the scoreboard again with a well taken point and Stephen Cahill increased our lead when he scored a free after Mikie O’Mahony had been fouled. St. Senans came back into to the match and scored two points of their own and shortly after they took the lead when they rose the white flag again. Another pointed free from Stephen Cahill had the side’s level again and the two teams went in at the break all square at six points apiece when they exchanged points in the last couple of minutes, Stephen Cahill showing his accuracy once again. It was all to play for in the second half, with both side’s determined to get their hands on the trophy. Our backs came under pressure but they were up for the task and did extremely well keeping the St. Senans forwards at bay. Our mid field pairing of Jonathan Fitzgerald and Stephen Cahill were well on top at this stage. The movement of our forwards was a constant threat to the opposition’s goals. St.Senans conceded four frees which were duly converted by man of the match Stephen Cahill. St. Senans hit back and scored the next three points on the trot to leave just one point between the teams. Sean Ryan who had a fantastic game scored a wonderful point after a blistering run up the middle by the very lively Jason Kelly. But soon after the sides were level for the fifth time of the match when St. Senans scored two points of their own. The Athea/Mountcollins combination rallied again and Stephen Cahill scored two more frees and Sean Ryan added another great point to give us a three point lead with three minutes left on the clock. It was a nail biting finish as Senans came back once again and narrowed the gap to a single point, but crucially we won possession from the kick out and worked the ball up field. Second’s later referee Seanie Harnett blew the final whistle to the delight of all the players, the management and all the supporters from Athea and Mountcollins. Jamie Lenihan captain accepted the trophy on behalf of the team and after a short speech and some photographs the cup headed back to Athea and Mountcollins for celebrations. Many thanks to Paul Collins Bar for the hot food afterwards and for sponsoring the man of the match award. A big thank you to all the people who travelled to support our boys and we are hoping to see you all again this weekend when we try to book our place in the U21 A County final.

Parish league:U13:

Our U13 Parish league took place on Saturday last in Páirc na nGael. After a great game of football it was the red team captained by Rory O’Mahony who were the winners on the day. The red team took a commanding lead in the first half but a great second half comeback by the blue team, captained by Gearoid O Sullivan made it a nail biting finish. It was end to end stuff for all the game and there was great support from the parents on the side line. All the players who took part received medals and Rory O’Mahony accepted the Stelcon Construction shield on behalf of the red team. Many thanks to the parents for bringing treats and thanks to our referee Pat O’ Sullivan who did a great job on the day.

Red Team: Rory O’Mahony, James Broderick, TJ Hunt, Dermot Pierse, Michael Tierney and Gavin Mulvihill.
