Athea GAA
Match:
Saturday October 22nd: U21:
Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 0-17
Shannon Gaels 2-10
Athea/Mountcollins Rangers U21s made it two wins on the trot with a one point win over neighbors Shannon Gaels on Saturday evening last. Mikie O’Mahony opened the scoring with a well taken point and two frees from the boot of Stephen Cahill gave us a three point lead after eight minutes. Shannon Gaels scored two points of their own to narrow the gap, but two more points from Stephen Cahill and one from James Ryan had us four to the good mid way through the half. Suddenly we took our foot of the pedal and let the opposition into the game. They had our backs under all sorts of pressure and we conceded 1-03 before the break. A pointed free from Stephen Cahill left us trailing by a single point at half time, Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 0-07, Shannon Gaels 1-05. The second half proved to be a tough battle, Shannon Gaels raced increased their lead scoring 1-03, our boys responded with another free from the boot of Stephen Cahill. The opposition scored two more points to lead by eight with sixteen minutes left on the clock. The game looked all over but we never gave up, our forwards were a constant threat to their backs and our midfield got on top again. The accuracy of Stephen Cahill from frees was top class as he scored seven unanswered points to leave just one between the teams with time almost up. Great work by Daniel Brosnahan set up Padraic Walsh who scored a super point to level the game and then in injury time Mikie O’Mahony raised the white flag to win the game for Rangers. This was a hard fought win and one that will stand to them later in the competition. Panel: Kieran Harnett, Jack Denihan, William Mullane, Tommy Quaid, Jason Dalton, Jonathan Fitzgerald, Dylan Griffin, Daniel Brosnahan, Stephen Cahill (0-13), Jason Kelly, Conor Moroney, Mikie O’Mahony (0-2), Padraic Walsh (0-1), James Ryan (0-01), Brian O’Connor. Pitch use:
At a time when our new pitch is well established we would hope that our club members make full use out of the high quality surface and goalposts. The more practice that a young player puts in the better they get. With the long evenings and dry pitch there is plenty of opportunity for players to use the pitch for practice in addition to training sessions. Some players are already doing so and the extra practice is serving them well. With the facilities we are developing combined with plenty of hard work and practice we won’t be long improving our results.
Facilities long ago:
Submissions are invited from past members who can remember the contrast between pitches long ago and what the current players have available to them. We will add to our notes the best submission received in the next two weeks where the differences are best articulated. Submissions should be handed in to Rose’s shop/Brouders or emailed to [email protected]
We would hope to invite further entries in the coming weeks on “long ago topics” from writers with good memories.
