We held our Fourth Club draw in Paul Collins Bar on Saturday night last. A big thank you to all who have supported our draw this year. Tickets are still available to purchase. This draw is a major source of funding for us and this year we are hoping you can continue to support us. Card Game:
Athea GAA are continuing their fundraising for their field development by starting a progressive 41 card game at Brown Joe’s on Monday night Oct 3rd at 9pm sharp. The game will be 2 x 3s so organize a couple of friends and bring along a team for an enjoyable night, cards are a great pastime and wonderful exercise for the mind. There will be cash prizes for first and second as well as a table prize and raffle prizes. If you haven’t played cards in a while don’t worry there will be plenty more in the same boat, if you can’t round up a team come on your own and we will have a team for you.
Pitch use:
At a time when our new pitch is well established we would hope that our club members make full use out of the high quality surface and goalposts. The more practice that a young player puts in the better they get. With the long evenings and dry pitch there is plenty of opportunity for players to use the pitch for practice in addition to training sessions. Some players are already doing so and the extra practice is serving them well. With the facilities we are developing combined with plenty of hard work and practice we won’t be long improving our results.
Facilities long ago:
Submissions are invited from past members who can remember the contrast between pitches long ago and what the current players have available to them. We will add to our notes the best submission received in the next two weeks where the differences are best articulated. Submissions should be handed in to Rose’s shop/Brouders or emailed to [email protected]
We would hope to invite further entries in the coming weeks on “long ago topics” from writers with good memories.

DERBY STALEMATE
Premier Division (Sun, Sept 18th)
Athea Utd (1) 1 Kevin Murphy
Killeaney (0) 1
For the second week in a row we let a lead slip to draw with a local rival. We took the lead midway through the first half with an excellent finish from Kevin Murphy, finishing into the top corner with his left after a nice move. Mark O’Connor, Michael Reidy and Cillian O’Connor all combined to feed Gerard Ahern, who turned in midfield and played a through ball to Murphy to finish. The Killeaney keeper had done well to deny Darren Murphy earlier on but after the goal we failed to create any real chances.
The second half saw those chances arrive but also pass without adding to our tally. There was always a chance we would get caught and the equaliser arrived through a penalty for Killarney. This was followed closely by a sending off for us which meant that it was anyone’s game now. That was to be the end of the scoring however and it was hard to tell which team was happier (if any) with the point.
Team: Mark O’Connor, Michael Reidy, Ronan Hayes, Padraig Reidy, Joe Vaughan, Cillian O’Connor, Jamie Collins, Gerard Ahern, James Ryan, Kevin Murphy, Darren Murphy. Sub used Ger Collins.

U14 Division 3 (Sat, Sept 17th)
Athea Utd (3) 5 Michael Tierney (3), Daire O’Shea, Paric Enright
Breska Rovers (0) 2
The fourteens made it two from two on Saturday with a home win over Breska Rovers though the score line doesn’t reflect the work rate of our opponents. We started off with a very fast pace to our game and we were rewarded when Michael Tierney picked the ball up outside the left edge of the area and came across before sending a screamer into the top right corner. The same player then doubled our lead when a corner from the right broke to him inside the area with Daire O’Shea making it three nil before half time.
The second half had Breska taking the game to us and after just two minutes they scored when a free kick on the right found the net. We did have a lot of the ball but again tended to take too much out of it. We were under pressure now and when the same Breska player that took the free kick for their opening goal scored from a thunderbolt of a free for their second it was game on. We weathered the pressure and got some breathing space thanks to Paric Enrights goal. Towards the end the hard working Tierney completed his hat trick to eventually earn us the win, a win that was earned the hard way.
Team: Gavin Mulvihill, Dermot Pierse, Brandon Finucane, Shane Scanlon, Gavin Ambrose, Paric Enright, Andrew O’Riordan, Michael Tierney, TJ Hunt, Eoin O’Shea, Gearoid O’Sullivan, Daire O’Shea, Jack Vaughan, Killian O’Connor, Conor Mullane.
