Matches:

County Minor 13 Aside Championship:

Athea 4-04         Galtee Gaels 2-10

Our Minors played their first competitive match in the newly developed Páirc na nGael on Thursday evening last when Galtee Gaels were the visitors to Athea. We got off to a great start when John Sexton tapped over for a point and shortly afterwards Brian Sheahan fired to the back of the net of give us a four point lead after five minutes. The visitors settled into the game and scored three points on the trot to close the gap. Athea responded when Sean Ryan pointed a free after Micheál Ambrose had been fouled. For the last seven minutes of the half Galtee Gaels upped a gear and scored a goal and four points without reply to lead at the break by five points. At the start of the second half thing got worse when Galtee Gaels got their second goal of the game. Our boys never gave up. A goal from Brian Sheahan, followed by a point from Alan Kelly brought us back into the game. Galtee Gaels scored a point of their own but a super point from John Sexton reduced the gap to four points. A great individual goal by Sean Ryan left just the minimum between the teams, but the visitors responded with a point of their own and time was almost up. A free in injury time was floated in by Alan Kelly and somehow Brian Sheahan finished it to the net to give us a one point lead. It was not over yet, Galtee Gaels scored a point late into injury time and the match finished in a draw, Athea 4-04, Galtee Gaels 2-10. This all means that we will have to beat Croom this Thursday evening in Páirc na nGael to progress to the semi-finals so all support would be greatly appreciated. Team: Conor Fitzgerald, TJ Doherty, Jamie O’Brien, Shane Ambrose, Andy Ahern, Alan Kelly, Brian Sheahan, Micheál Ambrose, Sean Ryan, Jack Vaughan, Mark McAuliffe, Padraig O’Sullivan, John Sexton, Micheál Dalton, Cillian Liston, David O’Sullivan & Marecks Shah.

Head Coach was Cillian O’Connor and the coaches at the camp were Rebecca McGuinness, David Connolly, Alannah Russell and Shauna Ryan. On behalf of Athea Utd like to thank Cillian and all the coaches who looked after all the children last week who did their job in a very professional manner.
