JUNIORS CLINCH THE DOUBLE
Our season continued to blossom when our juniors clinched the division one league and cup double last Sunday and it’s fair to say a well deserved title. Going into our final game we were a point ahead of Carrig Celtic so a win over Rathkeale B would see us crowned champions but disappointingly we got the three points after the opposition gave us a walkover. That gave an unassailable lead and we had won the division one title to add to the title we also won in 2013. In so doing we won the league and cup double for the first time.
We played eighteen league games, winning 15, drawing once and lost just two, scoring 77 goals and conceding 25. This gave us an impressive 4.2 goals per game and an average of 1.3 goals against per game. We scored at least one goal in every league game which is an impressive stat and at the other end we scored 77 goals with Kevin Murphy (20), Darren Murphy (19) and Dylan Griffin (11) contributing fifty of the league goals between them. No doubt Dylans tally would have being much more had it not for him being injured for a number of months. Defensively we were very solid and you have to have a strong defence and this we had in abundance with a regular back four for most of the season. In addition we went the last twelve games unbeaten (with eleven wins) which culminated with another league title. We will have a run down on the successful season in the coming weeks.
U16 Cup S/F (Fri, June 3rd)
Ballingarry (1) 3 Athea Utd (1) 1 John Sexton
We were away to another division one side last Friday night when we travelled to play Ballingarry in the cup semi final. Like in the Creeves game we opened the scoring with a goal from John Sexton but the home side came back to equalize to leave it all square at half time. In the second half we gave as good as we got but on the night Ballingarry took their chances as our lads began to tire a bit. The hosts added two second half goals to win three one.
Team: David O’Sullivan, Liam Henderson, Mark Brosnan, Seamus Leahy, Michael Dalton, John Sexton, Micah O’Connell, Ryan O’Connell, Cathal Brosnan, Andy Ahern, Jason Dillon. Subs Cathal O’Brien. Referee Paul O’Brien.

SUPER BLUES
Last Saturday the club took the U12s & U14s to The Markets Field to see Limerick FC play Drogheda Utd in the League of Ireland First Division. All were looking forward to the game and with the sun blazing down we left Athea with the boys all excited. The first half was poor with no goals but that didn’t bother the young supporters who really took in the atmosphere. Limerick scored first but were rocked with two Drogheda goals before an injury time goal preserved the super blues unbeaten run and preserved their fourteen point cushion at the top of the table. All in all a brilliant day out.

Donkey Derby:
There was great excitement at the Top of the Town bar on Saturday night last as John Hunt, who did an excellent job as MC, welcomed everyone to our first ever Donkey Derby to help raise funds for our Féile team. There were six donkeys in every race and the six winners went onto the final race, where they were put up for auction. Callum’s Dream, Brouder’s Shop, Knocknagorna Rocket, Butcher Boy, Knocknaboul Rocket and Silage Season battled it out to be Athea’s finest donkey. In the finish it was Knocknaboul Rocket owned by Johnny Cotter who won the race by a short head from Silage Season.
Thanks to all those who purchased donkeys and who supported our fundraiser on the night. A special thank you to Christina McKenna, Ann Tierney, Charmaine Ambrose, Julie Finucane, Alison Brady, Mary Hunt, David O’Connor, Mike Sheahan, John Hunt, Tom McEnery, Roger Ryan, Pat O’Sullivan and John Joe Tierney for all their help.
