County Division 2 Football League:
Friday May 27:
Athea 1-09 St. Senans 2-12:
We travelled to Foynes on Friday evening last to take on the locals in the County football league. The first half was a fairly close affair and we had good scores from Philip Collins, Shane Mulvihill & Gerard Ahern, who racked up six points between them. A goal late in the half by St. Senans brought them back into the game and the half time score read Athea 0-06, St. Senans 1-04. Senans started the second half brighter and went six points ahead when they scored a goal and two points within five minutes of the restart. Athea settled down and we were awarded a penalty, which Gerard Ahern converted. We then added points from Darren Murphy, Jamie Collins and Philip Collins to bring the match level. Unfortunately we failed to score for the remainder of the match while St. Senans tapped over six points to leave the final score Athea 1-09, St. Senans 2-12. We would like to wish Philip Collins a speedy recovery after he sustained an injury during the game. Team: Jonathan Fitzgerald, Michael Reidy, Matthew Tierney, Shane Tierney, Tommy Quaid, Padraig Reidy, Shane Mulvihill, Gerard Collins, Pa Chawke, Neilo Keane, Gerard Ahern, Jamie Collins, Darren Murphy, Philip Collins, Kevin Murphy, Mark O’Connor, Eoin McCarthy, Jason Kelly, Jason Dalton & Dan McMahon.

U14s:
Athea 1-06 Patrickswell 5-03
Athea 2-05 Croom 3-05
Our U14s played two matches within the past week. The first of which we travelled to Patrickswell and on the night, things did not go our way. In a fairly even first half, both sides played great football and even though we missed a lot of chances, we were one point ahead at the break after Daire O’Shea had converted a penalty. In the second half the home side had the better of the exchanges but the story could have been a lot worse but our keeper Evan Wallace was in fine form making a couple of great saves, including saving a penalty. Towards the end Patrickswell scored a couple of late goals and won on a score line of Athea 1-06, Patrickswell 5-03.
On Monday evening last we played Croom in Templeglantine. This was an outstanding performance by our young boys. A might effort was put in on the night and we had some great scores throughout the game. Our backs really worked hard and the Croom forwards had to fight for every score they got. Our forwards movement was excellent, creating several scoring chances and our midfield pairing of cousins Aidan Curry and Andrew O’Riordan worked very hard throughout the whole game. We won nearly our own kick-outs thanks to the accuracy of our goalkeeper Evan Wallace. Even though we lost this match by three points it was a super team performance against a very strong Croom side. Panel: Evan Wallace, Eoin Sheahan, Thomas McEnery, Pierce O’Brien, Jack Hunt, Alex McEldowney, Brandon Finucane, Aidan Curry, Andrew O’Riordan, Gavin Ambrose, Paraic Enright, Danny Brady, Daire O’Shea, Colin Broderick, TJ Hunt, Luke Gleeson, Eoin O’Shea, Adam Byrne, Padraig McMahon, Dermot Pierse.

MURPHY ON FIRE AGAIN
DIVISION 1 LEAGUE (Sun, May 29th)
Breska Rovers (0) 0
Athea Utd (1) 3 Kevin Murphy 29, 73, 77mins
Its coming to the nitty gritty end of the season and last Sunday we were away to Breska Rovers in our penultimate league game. We needed to win to preserve our slender one point lead at the top of the table but knew Rovers would provide a stern test as they already beat us 6-2 in our home fixture on October 4th.
On a very warm day stamina was going to be a factor and a good start would be ideal and inside the opening five minutes we had three decent chances with Gerard Ahern denied by a last gasp block by a defender while Darren Murphy went very close to adding to his impressive goal haul to date. After this opening flurry Breska came more into the game and won a number of corners which were well defended by our back four. Keeping the ball on the deck was going to be key and we began to do this effectively with Joe Vaughan in midfield showing his experience. By finding team mates in space and allied to the work rate of Ger Collins alongside him in the engine room we were able to get our wide players Kevin Murphy and Maurice Hayes into more attacking positions.
However it was Collins that was instrumental in us opening the scoring on twenty nine minutes. Sheer determination saw him go past two players and from the right side of the area he crossed low into the danger area where Ahern teed up Kevin Murphy to rifle the ball to the roof of the net. Ahern, deployed up front for this game was quite effective in holding up the ball and bring runners from midfield into play and this contributed in further chances for Hayes, the Murphy brothers and Vaughan. Half time 1-0.
We made one change for the second half with Jamie Collins on for Hayes who picked up an injury late in the first half. Like the opening forty five minutes we started this half on the front foot and using the ball well on a good surface chances began to appear. Despite this we were not clinical in front of goal and coupled to this the home keeper continued to be on top form. Fifteen minutes into the second half we had a great chance to extend our lead when we got a penalty following a foul on Jamie only for the keeper to brilliantly save Darren’s spot kick. Ger Collins then fired over as we continued to press forward before another sub was involved in the build up to our second goal on seventy three minutes. James Ryan playing on the left of midfield picked up a pass from Vaughan and took on the right back before crossing from the left, the ball going across the goals where Murphy side footed the ball to the roof of the net from ten yards. Four minutes later it was three nil when Ahern played a through ball to Murphy whose left footed volley into the ground ended in the bottom right corner. After this it was a case of holding steady and this along with very solid defending ensured a valuable three points.
Team: Pa Ahern, Mike Reidy, Mathew Tierney, Shane Mulvihill, Padraig Reidy, Kevin Murphy, Gerard Collins, Joe Vaughan, Maurice Hayes, Ger Ahern, Darren Murphy. Subs Jamie Collins, James Ryan, Steven McEnery.
