Matches:U12s:

Our U12s played three matches recently, first up was Askeaton/Ballysteen/Kilcornan, we then played Kildimo/Pallaskenry and last up was Shannon Gales last Thursday evening in Glin. In the first two matches our players tried hard, but unfortunately despite their best efforts they lost both games. Then in Glin, our players really turned on the style and put in a fantastic display of football to the delight of the Athea supporters. Our team has been improving with every game they play and deservedly defeated Shannon Gales in a very entertaining match. Panel: Donnchadh Barrett, Calum Gleeson, Gearoid O’ Sullivan, Shauna Sweeney, James Lee, Michael Walsh, Callum Buckley, Fergal Pierse, Cillian O’ Connor, James Broderick, Gavin Mulvihill, Lorcan Greaney, Rory O’ Mahony, Daire O’Shea, Evan Curry & Louis O’ Sullivan.

Wednesday June 23: U14:

Athea 5-02     Dromcollogher/Broadford 4-11

Our U14’s played Dromcollogher/Broadford away on Wednesday evening last. Even though the home side score 1-06 in this half we went in three points ahead, thanks to goals from Gavin Ambrose who got two, Daire O’ Shea who scored a penalty and Colin Broderick who fisted the ball to the net. In the second half Dromcollogher/Broadford got off to a great start scoring two goals and a point to take the lead, but we came back well, when Luke Gleeson scored a great goal and TJ Hunt tapped over from close range. Unfortunately the homed-side finished better to win on a score-line of Athea 5-02, Dromcollogher/Broadford 4-11.  Panel: Evan Wallace, Eoin Sheahan, Thomas McEnery, Pierce O’ Brien, Jack Hunt, Alex McEldowney, Brandon Finucane, Eoin O’ Shea, Aidan Curry, Gavin Ambrose, Luke Gleeson, TJ Hunt, Adam Byrne, Colin Broderick, Daire O’ Shea, Paraic Enright & Padraig McMahon.

Monday June 27: U16:

Our U16s travelled to Templeglantine on Monday evening last to take on Knockainey in the first round of the championship. We got off to a poor start and left ourselves with a mountain to climb at half time as Knockainey had built up a huge lead. We improved in the second half and created more scoring chances with John Sexton getting a great goal after a pin point pass from Jack O’ Connor. At the final whistle Knockainey were well ahead, our coaches were delighted with the improved performance in the second half and are looking forward to our next match away to Ballylanders in a couple of weeks. Panel: David O’ Sullivan, Joseph Dalton, Micheál Dalton, Alex McEldowney, David O’ Connor, Daniel McEldowney, Jamie O’ Mahony, Shane Ambrose, John Sexton, Aidan Curry, Jack O’ Connor, Cathal O’ Brien, Ryan Greaney, Jason Dillon, Danny Brady, Evan Wallace, Jack Hunt, Luke Gleeson, Pierce O’ Brien & Gavin Ambrose.

Féile Weekend:

The Féile weekend has come and gone but it is one that will be remembered for a long, long time to come. It all started on Thursday night when the Warwickshire team bus turned in the gates of Páirc na nGael to a warm welcome from our U14 Féile team, parents and supporters. After light refreshments the Warwickshire players met their host families and went back to their houses for a good night’s sleep in preparation for the weekend ahead. The following morning the Warwickshire team visited the local National School and played basketball in the hall with the Athea team. Later that evening both teams travelled to Ballymacelligott for the first two games of the Féile. Both teams played Boston, USA and Ballymacelligott B in four entertaining matches. Unfortunately we lost our two games but Warwickshire won their two. We would like to thank Ballymacelligott for a wonderful evening, the food was fantastic and the organization was top class. The following morning we played our visitors in Páirc na nGael’s new top class pitch. This was the first game on our newly developed field and Timmy Woulfe had the honor of throwing in the ball. This was an entertaining game with our boys giving it their all in front of a large crowd of supporters from both far and wide. Our friends from across the water were well ahead at the final whistle and it was great to see the sportsmanship of both teams as they mingled after the match. There was plenty food and refreshments in the Clubhouse afterwards for everyone to enjoy. From there both teams headed for Kanturk to play the quarter finals. Our boys played Tullysaran of Armagh and despite losing this game they put in a real gutsy performance. The Warwickshire team played Donaghmore and after a hard fought battle came out on top by four points. Both teams and supporters then headed to Newcastle West to take part in the Féile Parade. This was very exciting for both teams as a massive crowd had lined the streets to cheer team on. After the parade we arrived back to the Hall for a meal for teams, parents and supporters. Both Clubs presented each other with a token to mark the occasion. On behalf of the parents and Féile team, Eoin Sheahan presented our Féile coordinator Jacqueline O’ Connor with a bunch of flowers in recognition of all her hard work over the past few months. The following morning Warwickshire travelled to Cullen GAA pitch in North Cork to take on Currow in the cup semi final. Our Féile team and parents also travelled to Cullen to cheer on the boys. Unfortunately this was the end of the road for the Warwickshire team as Currow were well ahead at the final whistle. Both teams then made their way back to the Top of the Town to watch the Ireland game and to enjoy some food. After the game the Warwickshire team hopped on the bus and headed back home. On reflection this was a fantastic few days of friendship, fun and sport and we hope that everyone involved had a very enjoyable weekend. We would like to thank our main sponsors Athea and District Credit Union for their sponsorship. Johnny and Betty Cotter for their continued support. Colleen Reidy and Matt Tierney for the lovely food served on both days. Gerry Finucane for taking the photos over the weekend. The host families for taking such good care of our visitors. Mullane’s for the buses. Lisa Hunt for all her help on Saturday. All the parents who help out in any way over the weekend. We would also like to thank all those who helped out in any way getting the Clubhouse and pitch ready for the Féile. All the parents and families who donated food and goodies for the weekend. Rose Enright of Brouders shop for sponsoring the water for the team. A big thank you goes to the coaches for looking after our Féile team over the weekend. If we omitted anyone it was done in error. It’s hard to believe after all the preparations it’s all over now and hopefully the Club will get the chance to be a host Club for Féile again in the future.
