The death has taken place of John (Sean) O’Shea, Rooska, Carrigkerry. He lay in repose at Reidy’s Funeral Home, Newcastle West on Monday May 16th from 5pm to 7pm. His Requiem Mass was celebrated in Saint Mary’s Church, Carrigkerry on Tuesday at 11am with burial afterwards in Ardagh cemetery. We extend our sympathy to his wife Kathleen, sons Patrick and John, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, brothers, nephew, nieces, grand nephews, grand nieces, relatives and friends. May he rest in Peace.

Congratulations to the following pupils, Corey Eoghan, Molly, Michael, Eadaoin, David, Domas, Denis, Mikey, Zoie, Conor, David, Helena, Shane, Cathy, Katie, Mark, Eoghan, Elissa who received their First Holy Communion in Saint Colman’s Church, Kilcolman on Saturday May 14th.

Congratulations and best wishes in the future to Dympna Walsh, oldest daughter of the late Sergeant Christopher Walsh, Ardagh Barracks, and Eileen Walsh, who recently celebrated her 80th birthday party with her family and friends at Castleknock Lodge Hotel, Dublin. She was one of eleven in family and she did her teacher training in Carrysfort Training College Blackrock, Dublin.

Dympna qualified as a NS Teacher in 1955 but in the 1960’s went to UCD and qualified as a Child Psychologist.

She was a founding member of the PSI Special Interest Group in Learning Disabilities in 1974. It came about after the idea had been discussed at the PSI annual conference in Limerick in 1973. The other founding members were David Kenefick, Stephen Kealy, Sally Jackson and Seamus McLoone. It was the first special interest group to be formed within the Psychological Society of Ireland and the first Easter workshop was held in 1975 and received approval from the Department of Health.  A woman ahead of her time, Dympna travelled extensively all her life and still does not let the grass grow under her feet.

Glenroe defeated St Kieran’s by 1-18 to 1-12 in Round 2 of Group 2 of the County Intermediate Hurling Championship at Bruff on Friday May 13. Glenroe led by 0-11 to 1-2 at half-time, and maintained their six point advantage in the second half. Saint Kieran’s were defeated by Knockaderry on a scoreline of 3-12 to 0-10 in the West Junior B Football League semi-final played in Seán Finn Park, Rathkeale, on Sunday May 15. They trailed by 6pts to 3pts at half –time. Their scorers on the night were Darra Breen, 3 Seán O’Connor, 3 Owen Hayes, 2 Anthony Mullins, and Aengus Gannon, one point each.

Congratulations to Old Mill players Iris Kennelly, Leah Hayes, Sophie Liston and Roisín Mann, who were on the Limerick team that won the U 14 All Ireland Division 2 Football Blitz in Rathleague, Laois on Saturday May 14. Congratulations to Iris Kennelly who will represent Limerick in June in the Feile Skills Competition.

Carrig Celtic defeated Breska Rovers 3-2 at home in Division 1 of the Desmond League on Sunday May 15. Ray Cahill, Brodie O’Connor, and Anthony Molyneaux scored the goals. They defeated Glantine 2-0 away the previous Thursday evening with goals from Francis Moore, and Ray Cahill. Congratulations to the team and management who have been promoted back to the Premier Division. Carrig Celtic B lost 6-1 at home to Glantine B in Division 3. Creeves Celtic lost 4-3 at home to Newcastle West Rovers B, with Jason Ahern, 2 and Michael Guiney on target. They lost 3-1 away to Ballysteen the previous Friday evening.

The organisers of the recent Kilcolman N.S. Clothes Collection would like to thank everyone who donated clothes for their recent collection, which raised €600.

There are signs that the property market which has been depressed since the crash around 2008 is beginning to recover slowly. In Dublin and other capital cities prices have increased significantly in the renting and sales sector.  Out in the country things are slower with demand low as the population levels fell and work opportunities waned. In recent weeks the Sale Agreed sign can be seen in front of a number of houses around the locality.

The rosary will be recited each evening during the month of May at 7.30pm at Churchtown Grotto, Newcastle West, and all are welcome.

Newcastle West Film Club will present A Walk in the Woods as part of the Bealtaine Festival in the Desmond Complex Newcastle West on Thursday 26th May at the earlier time of 7pm. Admission is free, refreshments are available and all are welcome.

Glin will host the County Fleadh Cheoil from Friday 3rd to Monday the 6th June. It promises to be an action packed event over the Whit Bank Holiday with the best of music song dance and story on show. Best of luck to all the local competitors who will be participating.

The circuit of Munster car rally will be held around the locality over the Whit Bank Holiday. The Rathkeale House Hotel will be the headquarters for the event and Rathkeale will be the host town. The Clerk of the Course has put in place three challenging stages to test the crews and their cars on Sunday 5th June. The hidden back roads and rugged scenic landscape of West Limerick will be under the spotlight and spectators are guaranteed lots of thrills and spills. It is a number of years now since it was seen around the Knocknagun, Glensharrold, Barnigue, Kilcolman, Kilbradern, area.

The roads will be closed for Stage 2 and 3 from 10am to 6.30pm and local traffic will be accommodated where possible. Stage 2 will take in Kilquane, Cooltomin, Lissatotan, Kilbradern, Lisbane, Kilcosgrave, Tiermore, Dunmoylan, Kilcolman, Ballykiely and Kate Daly’s Cross Kerrikyle. Stage 3 will take in Kerrikyle, Glensharrold, Knocknagun, Barnigue, Gortadroma, Cahernagh and Dooncaha. Spectators should be aware of their own safety and obey the stewards at all times.

West Limerick 102 Community Radio will hold their first Rambling House in Monagea Hall on Monday 13th June commencing at 8pm. An All star line up of artists will be on stage to entertain the large crowd expected. Tickets cost €5 and all are welcome especially musicians, singers, dancers and storytellers.
