Division 1 League Cup S/F (Sun, April 24th)
Athea Utd (3) 4
Kevin Murphy, Padraig Reidy, Darren Murphy (pen), Maurice Hayes
Carrig Cel (1) 3
It was cup action last Sunday at The Vales where Carrig Celtic were visitors with the prize for the winners being a place in the Division 1 League Cup Final against either Feenagh or Breska Rovers. We were a bit slow to settle and found ourselves a goal down inside ten minutes but we responded and were soon level. The equalizer though had a bit of luck about it in the initial build up as their centre half let a through ball run to their keeper but the alert Darren Murphy chased it down and just got in between the centre half and the keeper and took the ball around them before crossing for brother Kevin to tap the ball into the net. We then went in front when Padraig Reidy was on hand to send a half volley to the net from a corner after it missed a number of players at the near post. We were playing well enough at this stage and stretched our lead when Darren converted from the penalty spot after Jamie Collins was fouled inside the area. Half time 3-1.
The second half saw more from the visitors and this resulted in a few chances before the cut the deficit to the minimum. We restored our two goal advantage when from a corner the ball wa`snt cleared effectively and it broke for Maurice Hayes and from ten yards out he placed it into the bottom right corner. That put us four two up but was slightly against the run of play. We conceded a penalty very late on which they scored but it wasn’t enough to deny Athea a place in the league cup final.

Rathkeale (1) 4
Last Saturday the youths were at home to division one leaders Rathkeale with a place in the Desmond Cup Final up for grabs. We played well in the first half and had chances but found ourselves a goal down at half time. We battled on but two goals inside the opening ten minutes of the second half effectively put the game beyond our grasp. The visitors tagged on a fourth before James Ryan got one back for us late.

County Intermediate Football Championship:
Saturday April 23:
Athea 0-07 St. Senans 2-17
Our Intermediate team got off to a poor start in the Championship when they were comprehensively beaten by a very clinical St. Senans team. The opposition were two points up after five minutes, but we were competing well at this stage and it was Shane Mulvihill who opened the scoring for Athea when he tapped over a free. We were soon level when Darren Murphy scored a great point, but shortly afterwards St. Senans went ahead again with a point of their own and then scored a decisive goal to extend their lead. Shane Mulvihill tapped over a close range free and just on the stroke of half time St. Senans raised the white flag to leave the half time score Athea 0-03 St. Senans 1-04. It was all to play for in the second half, but it was the opposition who totally dominated the rest of the match and our boys had no answer for the attacking play of St. Senans. They outscored us 1-09 to 0-01 in the first twenty minutes of the second half. We came into the game for the last ten minutes but it was all too late and the final score read Athea 0-07, St. Senans 2-17. Our next match is this Friday evening in Foynes at 7pm against Cappagh and both teams will be looking for their first win of the championship so it promises to be a tough encounter on the banks of the Shannon.
Team: Timmy Enright, Michael Reidy, Matthew Tierney, Padraig Reidy, Shane Tierney, Jonathan Fitzgerald, Tommy Quaid, Pa Chawke, Jamie Collins, Darren Murphy, James Ryan, Shane Mulvihill, Philip Collins, Pa Ahern & Kevin Murphy. West Junior B Football League:
Sunday April 24:
Athea 0-08 Mountcollins 0-07
Our Junior Bs got their second win in a row when they defeated Mountcollins on Sunday evening last. With a mixture of youth and experience Athea dominated the first half and thanks to Jason Kelly we were a point up inside the first minute. A powerful run up the middle by William Mullane set up Brian Ahern and he made no mistake tapping over the bar from close range. Our defense stood strong giving the Mountcollins forwards no chance on goal. We extended our lead when the very impressive Pa Kiely kicked over three frees from all angles. Emmet White got his name on the score sheet when he raised the white flag with ten minutes left to the break. The home side got their first point after twenty two minutes of play, but shortly afterwards Pa Kiely tapped over his fourth point of the evening leaving the half -time score Athea 0-07, Mountcollins 0-01. In the second half Mountcollins started to pile on the pressure, they had reduced the gap to two points mid way through the half and looked liked they would drive on and win the game. Our boys worked extremely hard for rest of the game forcing the home sides forwards into mistakes and we then got a crucial score when Brian O’ Connor tapped over from close range after great work by the mighty Neilo Keane. Mountcollins reduced the lead to a single point, but we withstood the pressure and won on a score line of Athea 0-08, Mountcollins 0-07. Team: Colm Hassett, Jason Dalton, Eoin McCarthy, Garry Carroll, Paul Matthews, William Mullane, Paul Mahony, Jason Kelly, Padraic Walsh, Neilo Keane, Brian O’ Connor, Pa Kiely, Emmet White, Brian Murphy & Brian Ahern. Subs: Dan McMahon, Killian O’ Donoghue, Joey Kelly, Padraig O’ Sullivan, Tony McAuliffe & Thomas Brosnan.
