Match:
West Junior B Football League:
Saturday April 16:
Athea 6-11 Glin 0-5
After the disappointment of the St. Kierans game our Junior Bs completely turned the tables and put in a top class performance against our near neighbors Glin on Saturday evening last. Two early goals from Philip Collins had Athea in control of this match. We were totally dominant in all areas of the field as Glin found it hard to break down our tight marking defense. We kicked some wonderful scores in this half with Brian Ahern, Philip Collins and Jason Kelly all putting their names on the score sheet before half time. Athea’s third goal from the very lively Neilo Keane gave us a thirteen point advantage at the break. In the second half, we continued to pile on the pressure on the Glin goals and once again our display of scoring points was a sight to behold. Jonathan Fitzgerald, Pa Kiely, Philip Collins and Padraic Walsh all kicked long range points, but Athea were not finished yet. A goal each for Brian O’ Connor, Brian Ahern and Paul Mahony left Athea with an impressive tally of 6-11 to Glin’s five points. Many of our players played exceptionally well but a special mention for Philip Collins who scored two goals and four points from play. We have two remaining games left to play in the league against Mountcollins and St. Senans. Team: Kieran Harnett, Eoin McCarthy, Shane Tierney, Jason Dalton, Tommy Quaid, Jonathan Fitzgerald, Jason Kelly, Pa Chawke, Padraic Walsh, Neilo Keane, Kevin Mahony, Garry Carroll, Pa Kiely, Philip Collins & Brian Ahern. Subs: Brian O’ Connor, Killian O’ Donoghue, Jack Denihan, Paul Mahony, Tony McAuliffe & Emmet White.

Athea United Soccer
YOUTHS TO PLAY OFF FOR TITLE
Youths Division 2 (Sat, April 16th)
Pallaskenry (1) 1
Athea Utd (1) 4 James Ryan, Sean Ryan, Adam Riordan (2)
Last Saturday week the top two sides in division two met at The Vales where ourselves and fellow leaders Broadford Utd played out a scoreless draw. This meant both went into their last league games level on points, we were away to Pallaskenry with Broadford away to Feenagh.
Pallaskenry had already beaten us 3-1 at home earlier in the season so we knew we would have to be tuned in from the off on Saturday. The first half was closely contested but we took a deserved lead when James Ryan finished off a fine move. The home side rallied and by half time the sides were level at one apiece. The second half was more fluid from Athea and we played some nice soccer and were back in front ten minutes into the second half thanks to Sean Ryan. We kept the momentum and made sure of the points with two further goals, both scored by Adam Riordan. Full time 4-1.
With Broadford also winning both sides will now play off for the division two league title.

Division 1 League (Sun, April 17th)
Athea Utd (4) 6 Darren Murphy (3), Kevin Murphy (2), own goal
Glantine (1) 1
The juniors got back to league action last Sunday morning with a home fixture against Glantine where we again scored six goals but on this occasion we didn’t throw it away. It was vital to get back in the groove and we hit the ground running and were three up inside ten minutes. The first after only two minutes came when Darren Murphy’s cross was put into his own net by a defender. It wasn’t long before Murphy himself got on the score sheet when a poor clearance by the keeper was seized upon by our top scorer and he fired low to the bottom corner before soon adding a third. We continued to play some good soccer on a good surface and twice came close to scoring again through Kevin Murphy but the keeper cut out both his chipped efforts.
Glantine now were getting more possession and had a few half chances before pulling a goal back on twenty four minutes which in truth was a bad one to give away. After a couple of minutes we regrouped and again took the game to Glantine and started to create more chances. From one of these Kevin Murphy beat the offside trap following a super pass from brother Darren and slipped the ball past the advancing keeper. Half time 4-1. The second half was for the most part a replica of the first but only yielded just two more goals. The first of these came from Darren who completed his hat trick from the penalty spot after Kevin was taken down inside the area. The mercurial Kevin then completed the scoring with a half volley from twelve yards.
Team: Pa Ahern, Michael Reidy, Jamie Collins, Padraig Reidy, Shane Mulvihill, Mark Horgan, Gerard Ahern, Maurice Hayes, Joe Vaughan, Kevin Murphy, Darren Murphy. Subs: Gary Carroll, John Cotter.
