Division 1 League (Sun, March 13th)

Athea Utd (2) 3 Darren Murphy (pen), Maurice Hayes, Shane Mulvihill

Askeaton A (1) 1

We were back in league action last Sunday morning with Askeaton as visitors to The Vales and at the end of the ninety minutes we had another win under our belts. It was by no means an easy win as Askeaton had spells of possession either side of half time and it was during this time the got their goal. We started well and inside five minutes we were ahead when Darren Murphy converted a penalty after he himself was fouled inside the area. On the quarter hour mark we increased our lead when Maurice Hayes received possession outside the right hand side of the area and his low shot eluded the keeper and squeezed inside the right post. We should have pushed on after this but allowed Askeaton back into the game and they capitalised on this when their midfielder headed to the net five minutes from half time.

The second half started with the away side probing but despite a lot of possession didn’t create a whole pile. Indeed it took an excellent free kick to the top right corner from Shane Mulvihill to give us some breathing space again in the form of a two goal cushion. Between this and the final whistle we had a few half chances to score again but their keeper made some saves to keep it at 3-1.

Team: Pa Ahern, Michael Reidy, Mathew Tierney, Padraig Reidy, Joe Vaughan, Steven McEnery, Gerard Ahern, Maurice Hayes, Shane Mulvihill, Jamie Collins, Darren Murphy. Subs James Ryan, John Cotter.

The youths were at home to Shannonside last Saturday in the quarter finals of the Desmond Youths Cup and ran our comfortable winners.  Evan Woulfe put us ahead after five minutes from a rebound after Adam Riordans rocket came back of the crossbar. James Ryan made it two nil with a left footed strike that whizzed inside the near left post and the skipper went on to complete his hat trick soon after. The goal of the game came five minutes from half time. A long clearance out of dfence came to Liam McAuliffe ten yards inside the Shannonside half out on the left  wing from where he sent a half volley goalwards and which flew over the keeper and under the crossbar. The second half again was dominated by Athea and we could have scored a few more but managed two from Evan Woulfe and Andy Ahern.

Athea Coiste na nÓg are delighted to announce that we will be taking part and also be a host club in this year’s National Féile Football Competition (U14) which will take place on June 24- 26. Féile will be the biggest youth sporting event in Europe in 2016 and will take place in South West Munster with clubs from West Limerick, Kerry and North Cork hosting visiting teams. Our visiting club will bring twenty four players who will stay with host families in our Parish for the weekend and each club will play a minimum of four games. This is a great opportunity for our U14 team to take part in a National Football competition and it also gives all involved the chance to make new friends with players from clubs outside Limerick. For further Féile information please check out GAA Féile on Facebook or follow @ Féilegaa on Twitter. If anyone knows of any accommodation available in the parish and surrounding area that weekend for the families of the visiting team please contact Jacqueline at 086-0670091.
