Our visiting club will bring twenty four players who will stay with host families in our Parish for the weekend and each club will play a minimum of four games. This is a great opportunity for our U14 team to take part in a National Football competition and it also gives all involved the chance to make new friends with players from clubs outside Limerick. If anyone knows of any accommodation available in the parish and surrounding area that weekend for the families of the visiting team please contact Jacqueline at 086-0670091.

U14 Div 3  (Sat, March 5th)

Shountrade (2) 4   Athea Utd (2) 4

They talk about a winter break in continental football, we defiantly had a 15 week enforced break, we played our last match on the November 21st last year. So the boys were eager to get playing the “beautiful game” in not so beautiful conditions in Shountrade

As one would expect the boys were slow to start and with the lack of match fitness and soft conditions, we were down 2-0 after fifteen minutes, but in fairness to the boys they got to grip’s with the game and forced there way back with a good goal from Paric Enright. We seemed to have the upper hand towards the end of the first half and with a great pass from Michael Tierney to Jack Hunt who beat his marker with pace to buried the ball in the bottom right hand corner. Half tie 2-2.

The second half started nip and tuck from both teams. Midway through the second half we were awarded a free kick around 25 yards out on the left hand side of the box. Michael Tierney took the free and as simple as you like, hit it right under the crossbar, 3-2 to Athea. Shountrade took no time at all in levelling the game at 3-3. At this stage we had the edge again and our pressure finally paid off with a great run by Thomas McEnery to put us back in front. We had a number of chances to kill off the game but could not put them away, would this came back to bite us? Low and behold into injury time, with the odd attack Shountrade got the equalizer. Full time 4-4

Overall it was a very good and dogged display by our boys and asI said earlier they haven’t had a competitive match in over 3 months and the condition’s the boys wouldn’t be used to. So well done to the boys and keep up the good work.

Reidy Cup Q/F (Sun, March 6th)

Glantine B (0) 0Athea Utd (2) 5 Darren Murphy (3), Kevin Murphy, Maurice Hayes.

We reached the semi finals or the Reidy Cup with a comfortable win away to Glantine B on a cold and damp Sunday morning. We did the bulk of the attacking and could have been ahead before top scorer Darren Murphy scored from close range after great work on the right by Maurice Hayes. The same route also brought our second goal with Murphy getting his seond after great determination by brother Kevin saw him pass two defenders before crossing to the back post giving Darren an easy finish. Half time 2-0

Glantine rarely threatened as we contiuned to dominate and it wasnt no surprise when Murphy got his hat trick with a cushioned header from Kevins cross from the left. Within two minutes it was four when Kevin got a deserved fourth with a low shot to the bottom right corner before Maurice rounded off the scoring with the last kick of the game.

Team  Pa Ahern, Michael Reidy, Mathew Tierney, Padraig Reidy, Joe Vaughan, Pa Kiely, Gerard Ahern, Maurice Hayes, Jamie Collins, Kevin Murphy, Darren Murphy. Subs Shane MulvihillDan McMahon.

Youths Division 2 (Sat, March 5th)

Broadford Utd (0) 2

Athea Utd (1) 2       Sean Ryan, Andy Ahern

The youths were away to fellow leaders Broadford Utd on Saturday afternoon last and came away with a share of the spoils after a two all draw. We were one up at half time through Sean Ryan but early in the second half the home side levelled matters and they got a second equalizer after Andy Ahern had restored our lead. There was very little to choose between the sides but we did have other chances to perhaps get a winner but still this was a good point to get.

Team  Mareks Apinis, Michael Ambrose, Evan Woulfe, Cillian Liston, Michael Dalton, John Sexton, Sean Ryan, James Ryan, Andy Ahern, Liam McAuliffe, Adam Riordan. Sub JJ
