Athea United Soccer
Division 1 League (Sun, January 24th)
Athea Utd (1) 3 Darren Murphy (2), John Cotter
Rockhill Rvs (0) 0
Following our win away to Feenagh last Sunday week action returned to The Vales where we had our first junior game since October 18th. Rockhill Rovers were visitors for this league game and after ninety odd minutes we recorded a hard earned three nil win. We did the early pressing but it was Pa Ahern that was the first of the keepers to be called into action, the Athea custodian getting down well to save at his near post. After this we got back on top and dominated possession with plenty chances, Gerard Ahern forcing a diving save from the keeper, Maurice Hayes finding the side net after some neat passing involving Ahern and Darren Murphy while left back Mathew Tierney’s shot across goal was inches past the far post. Eventually on thirty eight minutes we broke the deadlock when Murphy drilled the ball right footed across the keeper and inside the left post for his twelfth of the season. Half time 1-0.
We started the second half like we ended the first but chances were slow to materialise especially in the third quarter. With only a goal between the sides the potential for a Rockhill equalizer still remained especially with long balls into the penalty area but in fairness our back four were generally solid throughout. It was only in the last fifteen minutes that we at last began to carve out real good chances and in this period of time Murphy could well have had a hat trick before he extended our lead with a header from a Martin Chawke cross. A last gasp tackle denied right back James Ryan a certain goal before a point blank save from their keeper denied John Cotter his first of the season. Cotter didn’t have to wait long for his goal as he curled the ball into the bottom left corner from twelve yards before the final whistle sounded moments later. Full time 3-0.
Team: Pa Ahern, James Ryan, Mathew Tierney, Martin Chawke, Padraig Reidy, Steven McEnery, Gerard Collins, Maurice Hayes, Pa Kiely, Gerard Ahern, Darren Murphy. Subs: Jonathan Mulvihill, John Cotter, Neilo Keane. Referee: Jim Molyneaux.
Youths Division 2 (Sat, January 23rd)
Athea Utd (1) 3 John Sexton, Milan Williams, Andy Ahern
Carrig Cel (0) 0
Our youths were at home to Carrig Celtic last Saturday afternoon and recorded a hard earned three nil win. We led one nil at half time when John Sexton scored from close range after a cross from the left found him unmarked at the back post. Midway through the second half Milan Williams doubled our lead when he reacted quickest after the keeper could only parry a shot from Adam Riordan. We sealed the win when the ball broke kindly for Andy Ahern to fire to the roof of the net. Carrig had chances too, mostly in the first half when they also had a lot of possession but a defence well marshalled by James Ryan and Evan Woulfe held firm.
Team: Mareks Apinis, Michael Dalton, Donnacha McEnery, Evan Woulfe, James Ryan, Andy Ahern, Sean Ryan, Adam Riordan, John Sexton, JJ Sheehy, Milan Williams Subs William Sexton, Timothy Tierney. Referee: Jim Molyneaux.
