Athea United Soccer

U12 Division 3 (Sat, November 21st)

Athea Utd     (2) 2           Fergal Pierse, James Broderick

Creeves Cel  (0) 0

Our twelves were back at The Vales on Saturday where we had third placed Creeves Celtic as visitors and a close contest was envisaged. The day was overcast and very cold but this didnt bother the Athea side who gave a fine display to etch out a two nil win with goals early and late.

We got a great start with a goal after three minutes after good work by Callum Buckley and Killian O’Connor resulted in the ball being played across the box from the right and it came to Fergal Pierse to slot home from close range. Creeves responded and took the game to us but came up against a very resolute Athea defence of Calum Gleeson, Michael Walsh, Daire O’Shea and Evan Curry. Behind them was keeper Gavin Mulvihill who has being solid all season and again on Saturday was again in top form. We won a few corners in that first half and at the other end Creeves attacked on both flanks but Calum and Evan defended superbly while Gavin was quickly off his line to clear the ball at the edge of the box after the Creeves forward chased a through ball. Killian was playing well on the right wing and also won some good tackles, one was a memorable one where he won the ball cleanly before taking the ball down the wing. On a few other occasions we counter attacked at pace and twice we delayed the final pass that would have given us the opportunity to increase our lead. Half time 1-0.

The second half continued in a similar vein with chances for both sides. While Creeves had a spell of pressure in the second period the Athea players showed great determination and stopping their attacks effectively. The turning point of the game came twenty minutes into the second half when Gavin made a brilliant save by turning the ball around his left hand post when all present thought it was going in. After this close shave we knuckled down again and gave up no more real chances. Indeed we went close on a few more occasions, Shauna Sweeney took on their defence with a great run that yielded us a corner on the left that James Broderick nearly got on the end of.  We insured the three points with two minutes left when James ran from the half way line and outpaced the Creeves defence before squeezing the ball past the keeper and inside the left post.     Full time 2-0.

Matches:

U21 County Premier Football Championship:

Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 1-07      Newcastle West 4-11

Our U21s played Newcastle West in a repeat of last year’s county final on a sunny afternoon in Tournafulla on Sunday last. Despite scoring two great points in the first five minutes of the match, one each for Matthew Brouder and Stephen Cahill, we failed to get going in this encounter. Newcastle West were much the better team and with the help of two goals mid-way through the half they had a commanding lead. Another point from Matthew Brouder and two pointed frees from the boot of Shane Mulvihill kept Athea/Mountcollins Rangers in touch. The half time score was Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 0-05, Newcastle West 2-04. The opposition kept piling on the pressure in the second half and added a goal and two points within four minutes of the restart. A Matthew Brouder goal narrowed the gap, but Newcastle West kept the scoreboard ticking over kicking some great points. We only managed two more pointed frees from Shane Mulvihill and the final score was Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 1-07, Newcastle West 4-11. We now play Rathkeale/Cappagh this weekend in the quarter final and a big improvement is needed if we are to progress to the semi-final.                                                                                                                                                                      Team: Jonathan Fitzgerald, Timmy Finnegan, Jamie Lenihan, Diarmuid Flanagan, Dylan Griffin, Shane Mulvihill, Gary Vaughan, Stephen Cahill, Cian O’Sullivan, Conor Moroney Mikie O’Mahony, James Ryan, Padraig Collins, Matthew Brouder, Kevin Murphy. Subs: Jason Kelly, Kieran Hartnett, Padraic Walsh, John Lenihan, Kevin Mahony, Brian O’Connor, Jack Denihan, Denis Greaney, Jason Dalton & Mark O’Connor.
