Aileen Nix, Newcastle West, whose art exhibition “Residue” opened at the Red Door Gallery, Newcastle West on Friday September, 19 was featured on Limerick Matters on Irish Television, Channel 191 on Wednesday, September 30. Her work extends the life of discarded objects that are fast disappearing around rural Ireland.  Aileen’s much admired work was on display and a number of interviews were conducted during the short segment of the 30 minute programme. It looks to be a very interesting exhibition, and is well worth a visit.  Aileen is a member of the Sheedy family from Rooskagh East and continued success to her in her future work.

Cormac Long from Rooskagh and Rathkeale Boxing Club is currently in the national training camp for the upcoming European Boxing Championships in Poland. He was recently crowned Celtic Box Cup Champion in Dungarvan.

Ardagh/Carrigkerry Comhaltas branch held their AGM in Ardagh Hall and elected the following officers for the coming season: Chairman John Campbell, Vice-Chairperson Ann Marie Bourke, Secretary Gretta Trant, Treasurer Evelyn Mullins, Youth Officer, James O’Connor, Treoirí na Gaeltach, Marie Nolan, County Delegates, Ann Marie Bourke and Fiona Burke, PRO Jim O’Connor. Tributes were paid to retiring officers including Mike Daly who gave many years of service and commitment to the branch. The music classes take place each Tuesday night from 7-9pm, in Ardagh Hall. The dance classes take place each Wednesday from 4.30 -6.30pm also in Ardagh Hall.

Saint Kieran’s and Knockaderry drew 0-18 to 1-15 in the County Intermediate Hurling Cup Final in Newcastle West Gaelic Grounds on Saturday October 3. It was a very exciting and free flowing game that saw the sides level on six occasions. It was a perfect evening for hurling with a firm sod and lots of sunshine. A lot of scores came from frees with both sharpshooters contributing the majority of scores. St Kieran’s led by 0-9 to 0-8 at half time with Donal Nolan, 6 Johnny McCarthy, 2 and Seamus Mangan finding the target. They continued to hold the upperhand and were three points ahead with one minute left. Knockaderry scored a goal and a point from two frees to take the lead for the only time in the match. Donal Nolan pointed a 65 five minutes into injury time to tie up the scores. Jason Mullins and his team of officials took charge of the County Kerry Senior Hurling Final at Abbeydorney on Sunday, September 27. Kilmoyley defeated St Brendan’s by 3-15 to 1-13.

The local soccer teams had a day off in the men’s Desmond League on Sunday September 27. In the Ladies Desmond League Division 1 Creeves Celtic defeated Broadford Utd 6-0 away, Kilcolman Rovers defeated Kilbehenney 2-1 away and Carrig Celtic lost 4-3 at home to Glin Rovers.

Congratulations to Mike Robinson and Jack Woulfe who were prize winners at the card game held in Shanagolden Hall on Friday September 25. The weekly card game continues at the Flag Floor Glensharrold on Wednesday’s at 9pm. Tea will be served and all are welcome. The weekly card game in Ardagh Hall on Tuesday’s at 9pm. The proceeds will go towards the upkeep of the hall. All support is needed and will be appreciated by the committee.

The death has taken place of Finbarr Noonan of Holy Cross Place, Charleville, son of the late Nora and Charlie. He died after a brief illness on Saturday, September 19 in Porto Rico, Gran Canaria, Spain. He was the son of the late Nora, Sheehy, a native of Ballyloughane, Carrigkerry. Nora and Charlie were regular visitors to the village and the family were involved in the Golden Memories group who used to perform in Carrigkerry Lounge Bar, over the years.  Finbarr was a member of Erin’s Fury group and his brother Dan, known as the singing postman, is a regular performer on Cork Radio.

His remains arrived at Dublin Airport on Sunday, September 27 at 6.30pm and Holy Cross Church, Charleville at approximately 9.30pm. Rosary at Holy Cross Church on Monday, September 28 at 7.30pm. His Requiem Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, September 29 at 2.00pm. Burial afterwards in Holy Cross Cemetery. We extend our sympathy to his sons Anthony, Ross, Finbarr and Leon, daughter Jessica, brothers Charlie, Dan and Jeremiah, sisters Eileen (Griffin), Mary (O’Regan, Buttevant) and Margaret (Moloney, Kilfinane), brothers- in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends. May he rest in Peace.

“The Hills of Old Kilcolman” the Irish Traditional Music Album” from Jacki, and John O’Connor, Kilcolman, was launched on Friday night last in the Devon Inn Hotel Templeglantine.  A large crowd was present and enjoyed a good night’s music song, dance and storytelling. The other launch night for the album is this Saturday 10th October in Killoscully Community Centre, Killoscully, Co. Tipperary.  There is an open invitation to all to come along to the Launch night and enjoy some West Limerick traditional music and song. This album is currently for sale at Moloney’s Daybreak, Carrigkerry; Curley’s Post Office and Shop, Ardagh; Buckley’s Shop, Devon Road, Templeglantine; The Ramble Inn, Abbeyfeale; Mullane’s Costcutter, Shanagolden; MACE, Shanagolden; Trade Electric, Newcastle West and O’Connor’s Londis, Churchtown, Newcastle West. Net proceeds in aid of Milford Hospice, Limerick. All support greatly appreciated.

Mass will be celebrated in Kilscannell Cemetery on Sunday 11th October at 2pm and all are welcome.

A seminar on farm safety will be held at the Devon in Hotel, Templeglantine on Thursday 15th October at 7pm. A number of speakers, including James Clarke, from Adare a farm accident survivor, will address the meeting, followed by a question and answer session.  Refreshments will be served and admission is free.

The seventh Garry McMahon Singing Weekend will be held from Friday, October 16 to Sunday, October 18 in Abbeyfeale. On the Sunday afternoon in Fr Casey’s GAA Clubhouse, a special tribute will be paid to Donie Lyons from Dromreask, Glin. He will be honoured for his lifelong achievements as a musician and singer. All the events are outlined in a special brochure that is available in the Ramble Inn Bar, Abbeyfeale.

A charity céilí organised by SCOLA, to help the poor in the Philippines, will take place in the Devon Inn, Templeglantine on Sunday 25th October. Music by the Mountain Road Ceilí Band and all are welcome.

The Limerick Sports Clubs Quiz Challenge 2015 will be held in the Woodlands Hotel, Adare on Thursday 29th October commencing at 9pm. The event is open to all sports clubs within Limerick and there is over €1,000 in prizes to be won on the night. Kildimo/Pallaskenry GAA Club are the host club and the winning club will be the host club in 2016. Barna N.S. Fundraiser – Rachel Allen will host a cookery demonstration in the Limerick Strand Hotel on Thursday 12th November 2015 in aid of Barna N.S. Building Project, Pallasgreen, Co. The final of the West Limerick Scór Na Nóg competition will be held in Castlemahon Community Hall on Friday 13thNovember. All clubs are asked to participate in the multi choice of traditional events which include singing, dancing music, recitation, quiz and comedy.

The County Finals of Ceol an Gheimhridh, 2015 will be held in Shanagolden Community Hall on Sunday 29th November. Shanid Comhaltas branch will host the competition which is confined to comhaltas members. The age categories are Under 13 and 13-17 and the relevant information and entry forms have been sent to all the comhaltas branch secretaries.
