Athea United Soccer

U12 Division 3 (Sat, September 26th)
Abbeyfeale Utd B (0) 1

Athea Utd              (0) 2    James Broderick, James Lee

We were away to Abbeyfeale Utd B last Saturday morning in our fourth game of the season and we knew this would be a tough game as we were missing a number of players through illness. However the players that were there worked very hard and overall deserved to take the three points. We had a lot of the ball in the first half and had a few chances but at half time the sides couldn’t be separated.

Early in the second half we made the breakthrough when the pacy James Broderick beat the offside trap and finished well. Our defence was solid for the majority of the game with keeper Killian O’Connor having little to in the game. With eight minutes left Abbeyfeale equalized to leave the game finely balanced. Despite not having an under strength panel the boys dug deep again and were beginning to carve out a few more openings and from one of these we created a last minute winner. James Lee the player who got through their defence in the last minute and keeping his composure  slotted the ball into the bottom corner for his first goal for the blue and white of Athea Utd..

Matches:

County Intermediate Quarter Final:

Athea 1-10         St. Senans 3-16

Athea’s run in this year’s Intermediate Championship came to an end on Saturday evening last in Newcastle West as St. Senans turned on the style in the second half to run out easy winners on the day. We started brightly and opened the scoring when Shane Mulvihill scored a free after Pat Ahern had been fouled. The sides were level shortly afterwards, but a great move ended with Mark O’ Connor splitting the posts with a great point. We enjoyed a lot of possession but found it hard to score. The opposition tapped over two points, but another pointed free from the boot of Shane Mulvihill leveled matters again. A point by Gerard Ahern edged us in front, but St. Senans hit a purple patch scoring a goal and two points to take the lead. It could have been more, but a brilliant save by Jonathan Fitzgerald denied them a certain goal. Kevin Murphy scored a point just before half time to leave the score at the break, Athea 0-06, St. Senans 1-06. We started the second half brightly and Kevin Murphy scored a wonderful point to close the gap. St. Senans were then awarded a penalty which they converted and three more unanswered points gave them a commanding lead. We kept trying, James Ryan had his low shot brilliantly saved by the keeper, points from Mark O’ Connor, Shane Mulvihill and Neilus Hunt were added to by a Kevin Murphy goal, but it was all too late and St. Senans won on a score line of Athea 1-10, St. Senans 3-16. A big thank you to all our supporter who travelled to cheer on our boys.
