Monday August 31:

County Minor 13 Aside:

Athea 5-09         Croom 1-06

The very last match to be played in Páirc na nGael before it starts to be redeveloped this week was our Minors, who had a very impressive win over Croom in the County 13aside football championship on Monday evening last. A victory over Croom would ensure a semi-final spot for our boys and from the throw in you could see that they were determined and fully focused on the job in hand. Sean Ryan opened the scoring with a well taken point and shortly afterwards Brian O’ Connor scored a goal after great work by Micheál Ambrose. Brian got his second goal in as many minutes when Ronan Hayes sent in a lethal pass from thirty yards. Sean Ryan split the posts with a free after Brian O’Connor had been fouled. Paul Mahony and TJ Doherty were having a super game in the back line as was Jason Dalton, Micheál Ambrose and Killian O’ Donoghue in the half back line. Brian O’ Connor got his third goal after been set up by the very impressive James Ryan. Croom rallied and scored a goal and a point to get back into the game. The score of the match came after seventeen minutes when a move involving Padraic Walsh, Jason Kelly and James Ryan ended with Sean Ryan slipping the ball past the oncoming keeper to raise the green flag and give us a commanding lead. The visitors scored another point, but one from Brian O’ Connor and two points from Sean Ryan left the half time score Athea 4-05, Croom 1-02. Our boys kept up the pressure in the second half and two super points from the boot of Brian O’Connor increased our lead. Conor Fitzgerald was having a fine game in goals and his accuracy from the kick outs was a major factor in the launching of many of our attacks. Ronan Hayes who also had a fine game got his name on the score sheet after ten minutes when he scored a long range free. Athea’s fifth goal came when Brian Sheahan fisted to the net following a pass from Sean Ryan. Croom scored three late points, but Brian O’Connor capped of a fine performance when he tapped over from close range to bring his tally for the night to three goals and four points. At the final whistle the scored read Athea 5-09, Croom 1-06 which means we have qualified for the semi-finals which will be played shortly. The U6s, U8s, U10s, and U12s all took to the field shortly after one and played some excellent football to the delight of all the parents, grandparents, brother, sisters and family members who were there to enjoy the day. The U6s played a very exciting match which ended in a draw and Mark Collins and Tom Mullane were joint winners of the shield. Jim Ahern was the winning Captain of the U8s and Mairead O’ Shea presented Jim with the Jackie and Nora Mullane Trophy. Our U10s played some excellent football in the Billy Kirwan tournament on Saturday last. We played out an exciting draw against our near neighbours Glin but unfortunately just lost out in extra time. We then played St. Senans in the shield final and this was another very exciting game. Feenagh    (1) 1      Darren Murphy

We were at home to Feenagh last Sunday and got our second win of the season with a comprehensive display from start to finish. We opened the scoring when pressure forced a defender to put the ball in his own net and goal number two soon followed when Padraig Reidy, up from the back scored a rare goal. Dylan Griffin soon made it three before the visitors got one back but that was as good as it got for Feenagh as Darren Murphy restored our three goal cushion and hats how it stood at the break.

Ten minutes into the second half James Ryan got his first junior goal with a sweet strike from thirty yards that flew inside the left post while swift footwork from Murphy saw him create space inside the area to curl the ball low inside the far right post for number six. We were dominating in all areas and Griffin got his fifth goal in three games when he beat the offside trap and slotted past the keeper. The rout was completed when John Cotter released Steven McEnery to fire to the roof of the net.
