The wall is washed and painted, the dressing rooms are shining, the grass is cut and all is in readiness for the 40th anniversary celebrations in Killeaney Soccer grounds this weekend. A big marquee is being erected for the occasion. This will be the 2nd time a marquee will be seen in Knockdown as the Clounleharde School Reunion had one also, exactly two years ago. Best wishes to the Killeaney committee who has put in lots of work into organising this big event. The weather looks like it will be fine for Saturday evening which should ensure that everybody will have a good night. Don’t forget the Irish Night on Friday to kickstart the celebrations. Did you know that Killeaney AFC was founded on Tuesday 25th March 1975 by Michael Sheehy, Clonoughter, Joe McGrath, Turraree and Paddy Mulvihill, Killeaney. Mike Sheehy was Chairman; Paddy Mulvihill was made Secretary; Paul Wallace as Assistant Secretary and Joe McGrath got the Treasurer’s job. These are just some of the memories which will keep people talking throughout the weekend.

Sympathies to Fiona Prendeville, Glenbawn, on the death of her grandmother Phyllis Dee, of Asdee, last weekend.

I attended a meeting of the Diocesan Synod delegates last Saturday in Thomond Park. Some witty person said it was appropriate to look for conversions in that hallowed ground! About 200 people attended; some enthusiastic, some fearful of too many changes and some fearful of not enough changes; but all were supportive of the idea of holding a Diocesan Synod. Everybody was encouraged to speak what was in their heart and not to be afraid to say what they wished to say. The results of the synod survey which each parish organised in recent months are being collated at present. It was interesting to note that there was a great range of responses from schoolchildren up to senior citizens throughout the diocese. It is most heartening to see may young people at the meetings and to note their interest and enthusiasm in the work of the synod. The next gathering takes place in September where the delegates will have opportunities to brush up on their catechesis and do some preparatory work for the actual synod in Easter 2016. The agenda for that will be based on the most common issues arising from the survey. It should be interesting.
