Athea 2-09        Gerald Griffins 0-13

Athea entertained our near neighbours Gerald Griffins on Wednesday evening last in Páirc na nGael. We started brightly with a well taken goal by Pat Ahern. The opposition scored two points of their own and Kieran Harnett denied them a certain goal when he pulled of a great save. Athea settled down and scored three unanswered points with James Ryan, Gerard Ahern and Jamie Collins all getting their names on the score sheet. Gerald Griffins scored two points to close the gap, but a hat trick of points from Gerard Ahern gave us a five point lead. The visitors scored a point just before half time to leave the score at the break Athea 1-06, Gerard Griffins 0-05. Eight minutes into the second half Gerard Ahern scored a goal, then a point and it looked like we would win easy but Gerald Griffins had other ideas. They outscored Athea eight points to two in the last twenty minutes of the match. Gerard Ahern and Shane Tierney were the Athea scorers and at the final whistle the score line read Athea 2-09, Gerald Griffins 0-13 .Having received a walkover from Bruff on Saturday evening last we have maximum points on the table with only one game left. U8:

Our U8s played in a home Blitz in Páirc na nGael on Friday evening last. Playing teams from Newcastle West, Mountcollins and Knockaderry it was a great chance to see our young boys and girls playing in the maroon and white. They played extremely well on the night giving plenty of entertainment for all who came to support them. Everyone who attended got well deserved treats in the Clubhouse before they went home. Thanks to our referees for the evening, Derek Byrne and Roger Ryan. Panel: Fionn Histon, Louis O’Sullivan, Emma Scanlon, Tony Ahern, Jim Ahern, Jack Sexton, Tom Ahern, Tomás Ahern, Sean Twomey, Molly Hunt, Alex Quinn & Jamie Flynn.

Athea School Blitz:

Athea hosted a school blitz on Friday last in Páirc na nGael with players coming from Athea National School, Knocknasna National School and Templeglantine National School to take part. The names of all the children from the three schools were put into a hat and four teams were picked out, Limerick, Kerry, Dublin and Donegal. They all got to play three matches each and these were very exciting games with no more than a kick of a ball between them. Afterwards Gavin Ambrose won the boys skill challenge and Stephanie from Templeglantine won the girls skill challenge. All the children got treats before they went home and are looking forward to next year already. Many thanks to the teachers from the three schools, for without whom this would not be possible. A big thank you to our referees on the day Derek Byrne and David O’ Connor.
