Junior B Football League:

Athea 2-05        Mountcollins 4-05

Our Junior B team lost out to Mountcollins in a very entertaining game in Páirc na nGael on Tuesday evening last. Mountcollins opened the scoring with a point, but we were soon ahead when Steven McEnery found the net from a Brian Murphy free kick. Points from Pa Kiely and Neilo Keane increased our lead, but Mountcollins responded with a goal. Pa Kiely pointed a free after Neilo Keane had been fouled. The visitors hit a purple patch before half time scoring 2-03 to lead by seven points at half time. We came back early in the second half, when William Sexton scored two great points and Jason Kelly scored a brilliant goal to close the gap to two points. We tried hard to equalize, but it was Mountcollins who finished stronger with a goal and a point to leave the final score Athea 2-05, Mountcollins 4-05.Team: Roger Ryan, Padraig O’Sullivan, Sean Ahern, Eoin McCarthy, Jason Dalton, Tommy Quaid, Garry Carroll, Pa Kiely, John Geoghegan, Brian Murphy, Brian Ahern, Neilo Keane, Emmett White, Steven McEnery, William Sexton, Dan McMahon, Jason Kelly, Killian O’ Donoghue & Paul Mahony.

Intermediate Football Championship Round Two:

Athea 3-06        Cappamore 0-03

Our Intermediates made it two wins out of two with a comfortable win over Cappamore in Feenagh on Saturday evening last. Our confidence was high after our first round win against Glin and a powerful first half performance laid the foundation for this twelve point victory. We opened the scoring when Pa Ahern found the net after a great run up the middle by Denis Greaney. Shortly after Denis fisted the ball over the bar following another one of his great surges up the field. Thirteen minutes into the match Jamie Collins was fouled inside the square and Gerard Ahern slotted the resulting penalty into the corner of the net. Our defense was strong and Cappamore could not mount any decent attack on our goal. Dylan Griffin scored a long range point to increase our lead and Shane Mulvihill found the net following great work by Jamie Collins. Two great points from the boot of Kevin Murphy came just before Cappamore got their only score of the first half with a point on the stroke of half time to leave the score at the break, Athea 3-04, Cappamore 0-01.The second half was a lack luster affair with both sides finding it hard to score. Cappamore scored two early points, but failed to score for the rest of the match thanks to the tight marking of our backs. Our boys only managed two scores as well, a point each for Jamie Collins and Shane Mulvihill which left the final score Athea 3-06, Cappamore 0-03. At the end of the day we have maximum points from our two games and our next championship match is a top of the table clash with Galbally in five weeks’ time. We would like to thank all those who travelled to support the maroon and white, as always your support is greatly appreciated. Team: Jonathan Fitzgerald, Michael Reidy, Matthew Tierney, Raymond Brouder, Denis Greaney (0-1), Tom Collins, Shane Mulvihill (1-1), Jamie Collins (0-1), Martin Chawke, Dylan Griffin (0-1), Mark O’Connor, Shane Tierney, Gerard Ahern (1-0), Patrick Ahern (1-0), Kevin Murphy (0-2). U15:

We travelled the long journey to Ballylanders to take on the locals in our last game of the U15 league. Even though we had nothing to play for, our boys played liked it was an All-Ireland Final. Ballylanders started the brighter with two points inside the first two minutes. Then our team settled down and John Sexton was first on the scoreboard with a great point after some good work by David O’ Connor. The very impressive Shane Dalton was next on the score board with another point and then he scored a wonderful goal after great work by Andy Ahern. John Sexton increased our lead when he split the posts with another point and shortly after Andy Ahern found the back of the net to give us a seven point lead midway through the half. Ballylanders launched a few attacks of their own, but our defense led by Micheál Dalton and Shane Ambrose stood strong and David O’ Sullivan was having a blinder in goals. Another point for Andy Ahern, two for Shane Dalton and one for John Sexton gave us a big lead, but just before half time Ballylanders hit back with a goal to leave the half time score Athea 2-7, Ballylanders 1-02. With the aid of a strong wind in the second half the home side came back into the game and put us under all kinds of pressure. We tried hard to move the ball into our forwards, but found the tight marking opposition hard to break down. Ballylanders scored 2-03 in this half and unfortunately we were unable to raise any of the flags into the wind. At the final whistle the home side had won on a score line of Athea 2-07, Ballylanders 3-05 but our boys can be very proud of their performance and attitude for this match.   Team: David O’Sullivan, Joseph Dalton, Micheál Dalton, Jamie O’Mahony, Jack O’Connor, Shane Ambrose, Seamus Leahy, Daniel McEldowney, Shane Dalton, David O’ Connor, John Sexton, Aidan Curry, Brian English, Andy Ahern, Luke Gleeson & Jack Hunt.

2015 AWARDS NIGHTANOTHER SUCCESS

We held our Annual Awards Night last Friday night, May 8th at The Top of the Town, Athea which was very well attended. Having won no trophies in 2014 we rectified that in 2015 with two league titles for the

U-10s and U-14s while the U-16s finished second in their league. The Awards Night is about reflecting back on the season and how our players did individually and collectively as part of a team and I think its fair to say we had a very good year with two league trophies resting proudly at The Vales.

The players of the year were presented with their awards and the U10s and U14s were presented with their league medals and the U16s with their runners up medals. This season we presented a golden boot to the top scorers for our underage teams and the recipients were at U10 Callum Buckley and James Broderick (joint top scorers), U12 Eoin O’Shea, U14 Jason Dillon and U16 Liam McAuliffe. Presentations were made to U11 player Daire O’Shea who is part of the Limerick Desmond Schoolboys League Academy Squad, to U12 player Andrew O’Riordan who is part of the Limerick Desmond Schoolboys League Inter League Squad and to Sean Ryan who is on the FAI’s Emerging Talent Programme again last season.

The U8s received medals for their efforts during the season for their dedication to training and in their friendly games so far this season under manager Pa Walsh. .

Also on a league viewpoint the club congratulates Shane Dalton who was voted U16 Division 2 player of the year for 2015 and will receive his award at the Leagues Awards Night on Bank Holiday Monday, June 1st at Rathkeale House Hotel.

The following are the Athea Utd players of the year for 2014
