Monday April 6:
U16s:
Athea 2-09 Deel Rangers 2-06
Our U16s got off to great start in Division two of the football league when they beat Deel Rangers in Páirc na nGael on Monday evening last. Sean Ryan opened the scoring when he pointed a free after Alan Kelly had been fouled. Deel Rangers hit back with a point of their own and followed it up with a goal from the penalty spot. Athea’s response was quick when a strong run by Sean Ryan split the Deel Rangers defense; he laid it on to John Sexton who stuck the ball to the back of the net. This seemed to settle our team with our two corner backs Mark McAuliffe and David O’ Connor playing outstanding. Alan Kelly and Micheál Ambrose at midfield set up many attacks for our forwards who were causing their backs all sorts of problems. We scored three unanswered points, one each for Sean Ryan, Alan Kelly and Liam McAuliffe to extend our lead, but two late points just before half time from the opposition left just one point between the teams at the break. The half time score was Athea 1-04, Deel Rangers 1-03.
Five minutes into the second half the sides were level when Deel Rangers scored the opening point. We then hit a purple patch with the very impressive Sean Ryan scoring three unanswered points and shortly after Brian Sheahan sent a low ball across the square and Jack O’ Connor was on hand to blast the ball to the net. Deel Rangers tapped over two points of their own to close the gap. Alan Kelly splits the posts with a wonderful point to give us a six point lead with five minutes left on the clock. Our backs came under pressure but they stood firm led by Captain Cillian Liston. A late goal and a point for the opposition left the final score Athea 2-09, Deel Rangers 2-07. We now play Fr. Caseys in Abbeyfeale next Monday evening.
Team: David O’Sullivan, David O’Connor, Shane Ambrose, Mark McAuliffe, Micheál Dalton, Cillian Liston, Jack Vaughan, Micheál Ambrose, Alan Kelly, Sean Ryan, Liam McAuliffe, John Sexton, Daniel McEldowney, Brian Sheahan, Jack Gleeson, Jack O’Connor & Andy Ahern.

U-14s ARE LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
U-14 DIVISION 3 (Tue, March 31sth)
Athea Utd (4) 8 Jason Dillon (6), John Sexton, Micah O’Connell.
Bluebell Utd (0)0
Last night week at The Vales our under fourteens played their last game of the season needing a point against Bluebell Utd to win the league and we did so in style with a comfortable win. It might seem a long time ago but think back to Thursday, September 4th when we played our first game at home to Abbeyfeale Utd B. That evening we were well beaten and its fair to say that we had no shape to the team and we made numerous mistakes but since then we have improved with every game and eleven wins in a row proves how well the team has done. Picking a player of the year is going to prove difficult now.
Going back to last night week and from the off we took the game to the opposition and we had a few early chances before Jason Dillon put us ahead and after this there was going to be one winner. Skipper John Sexton made it two nil soon after before two quick goals from Jason before half time had us well on our way. The trend continued in the second half when Jason added another three goals in the second half while Micah O’Connell also found the net. This was a team success as over the course of the season different players played well from goalkeeper up to the strikers as well as the subs we used over a long season. So well done to all the players and the management team on a job well done and another title residing at The Vales. A big thanks to all the supporters who cheered on the boys last week and a hugh thanks to the parents who supported the team at all the home and away games.
After the game John Phillips from the LDSL presented Athea Utd captain John Sexton with the league trophy.
