U21 Premier Football Championship Final:

Saturday January 10:

Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 0-07        Newcastle West/Monagea 5-16

After the thrills and excitement of last week in Dromcollogher, Athea/Mountcollins Rangers U21 team were well beating by a clinical Newcastle West/Monagea team in Tournafulla on Saturday evening last. We chose to play with the wind in the first half, but it was the opposition who went in six points ahead at half time. We started well and it wasn’t long before we were on the scoreboard when Pa Delee tapped the ball over the bar for the opening score of the match. Newcastle West/Monagea went ahead after scoring a goal when our defense were caught napping. Pa Delee closed the gap when he pointed a free, but the opposition scored two points of their own to extend their lead. Shane Mulvihill was next on the scoreboard with a point, but then disaster struck when Newcastle West/Monagea scored two goals and a point in quick succession to take control of the match. Our boys did not drop their heads and came back into the game. Two points from Pa Delee and one each for Maurice Hayes and Kevin Murphy closed the gap. We had a couple of goal chances as well, Kevin Murphy’s brilliant effort was well saved by their keeper and went over the bar for a point, while Ryan Carroll’s shot on goal was well blocked and cleared by their defense. We went in at the break six points down and facing a strong wind in the second half, it was always going to be difficult. After the break we tried hard to break down their defense, but the Newcastle West/Monagea tails were up and they did not give away an inch. Wind aided, the opposition took control and totally dominated the rest of the match and ran out easy winners at the final whistle. Our boys never gave up in the second half and kept trying hard, but the best team won on the day and Athea/Mountcollins Rangers can be proud of their achievements this year.

Many thanks to the managers Pat Ahern and Michael Lenihan and to all those people who were working hard behind the scenes to look after this team. It was great to see both parishes come together and unite in supporting our boys by putting up flags around the parishes and by attending the matches to cheer them on. It is greatly appreciated.
