U21 Premier Football Championship Final:

Sunday January 4:

Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 1-08         Newcastle West/Monagea 1-08

All roads led to Dromcollogher on Sunday last as Athea/Mountcollins Rangers took on Newcastle West/Monagea in the Final of the U21 Premier Football championship. The large crowd in attendance were treated to a very tense and exciting hour of football and our young boys showed great character in the second half  when they came back to get a well deserved draw. The heavy underfoot conditions made it hard for both teams and it was Newcastle West/Monagea who opened the scoring with a well taken point. The sides were soon level shortly afterwards when Cian O’ Sullivan scored a wonderful point from thirty yards. The opposition were on top at this stage and had our backs under pressure and took the lead again with another well taken point. A Pa Delee attempt for a point was half blocked down and gathered by their defense, but great tackling by our forwards broke the ball loose and Stephen Cahill was quickest to react to score a great goal to put us into the lead. Newcastle West/Monagea responded with two points of their own to level the match. Maurice Hayes was next on the scoreboard when he tapped over after a quick free kick from Kevin Murphy to give us the lead again. We were caught ball watching as we approached half time when a high ball into the square was fielded by an unmarked Newcastle West/Monagea forward and he gave Jonathan Fitzgerald no chance as he buried it in the back of our net. Our response was good and quick, Pa Delee scored a mighty free from forty five yards out and Maurice Hayes split the posts with a super point after great work by Stephen Cahill. The sides were level at the break 1-04 apiece and it was all to play for in the second half. Playing into the wind after the break along with the heavy ground was going to be a tough task for our boys, but we took the lead again when Shane Mulvihill scored a free after five minutes. Newcastle West/Monagea started to dominate and hit a purple patch scoring four unanswered points and looked like pulling away with ten minutes left on the clock. Athea/Mountcollins Rangers were having none of it and staged a comeback. Our defense dug deep, our mid-field got on top and our forwards were causing their backs all sorts of problems. Shane Mulvihill scored two great points to close the gap and Pa Delee leveled the match with a super point to the cheers of the all the supporters from both parishes. The scoreboard read Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 1-08, Newcastle West/Monagea 1-08 at the final whistle and the replay will take place next Saturday in Tournafulla at 2.30pm. The Club would like to thank all those who travelled to Dromcollogher to support our boys and hopefully we will have another big crowd in Tournafulla this Saturday. Team: Jonathan Fitzgerald, Timmy Finnegan, Jamie Lenihan, Diarmuid Flanagan, William Mullane, Denis Greaney, Dylan Griffin, Matthew Brouder, Stephen Cahill, Maurice Hayes, Shane Mulvihill, Ryan Carroll, Kevin Murphy, Pa Delee, Cian O’Sullivan, Mark O’Connor, Kevin Mahony, Conor Moroney, Jason O’Flaherty, Daniel Brosnahan, Padraig Collins, Johnny Stack, Padraic Walsh, Kieran Harnett, Gavin O’Reilly, Mikie O’Mahony & Liam O’Brien.

U21 Premier Football Championship

Friday December 19:

Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 1-07         Ballybrown 0-06

Our U21’s have booked their place in this year’s Premier County Final after a hard fought win over Ballybrown in Mick Neville Park on Friday night December 19. Scores were hard to come by but Shane Mulvihill opened the scoring with a well taken point from a free after Kevin Murphy was fouled. Shortly after Maurice Hayes rose the white flag after great work by Matthew Brouder. The opposition responded with a point of their own and then were on the attack again but our defense stood strong, Denis Greaney broke away with the ball, passed it on to Kevin Murphy and he laid it off to Shane Mulvihill who buried it into the top corner of the net for a fantastic goal. Pa Delee exchanged points with Ballybrown and they finished the half stronger scoring two points to leave the score at the break Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 1-03, Ballybrown 0-04. Shane Mulvihill got two points at the start of the second half, but it was Ballybrown who were on the attack most of the time but left their scoring boots at home. They did manage to score two points to close the gap, but a point each for Dylan Griffin and Shane Mulvihill in a very tense and exciting final ten minutes left the full time score Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 1-07, Ballybrown 0-06. The Final will be played on Sunday January 4 at 2pm, venue to be confirmed. It would be great to see the whole parish get behind this young team and come along to the final to cheer them on. Team: Jonathan Fitzgerald, Timmy Finnegan, Jamie Lenihan, Diarmuid Flanagan, William Mullane, Denis Greaney, Dylan Griffin, Matthew Brouder, Stephen Cahill, Maurice Hayes, Shane Mulvihill, Ryan Carroll, Kevin Murphy, Pa Delee, Cian O’Sullivan, Mark O’Connor, Kevin O’Mahony, Jason O’Flaherty, Daniel Brosnahan, Padraig Collins, Johnny Stack, Padraic Walsh, Kieran Harnett & Liam O’Brien.
