U21 Premier Football Championship

Friday November 7:

Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 1-12         Fr. Caseys 1-10

Athea/Mountcollins Rangers put in a super second half performance to beat near neighbours Fr. Caseys in the third round of the U21 Premier Football championship in Mick Neville Park on Friday night last. We started poorly and it was not long before Fr. Caseys had two points on the board. We were lucky not to be further behind, gaps were beginning to show in our defense as the opposition ran at us, but they missed a few easy scoring chances. After a few close calls we woke up, our defense tightened up, our midfield got more on the ball. Soon after, we were on the scoreboard when Matthew Brouder and Kevin Murphy tapped over a lovely points. Fr. Caseys pulled ahead again but points from Pa Delee (0-2) and Shane Mulvihill had us level with five minutes left in the half. A late surge by the opposition gave them a two point advantage at the break to leave the score line reading Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 0-5, Fr. Caseys 0-7. In the second half, Fr. Caseys were first on the score board with a well taken point. Then Ryan Carroll’s well struck penalty was brilliantly saved by the Fr. Casey’s keeper but as they attempted to clear the ball it was intercepted and passed into the unmarked Ryan who made no mistake slotting the ball under the keeper into the net. This rallied the team and they put in a powerful display of football for the next twenty minutes. Five unanswered points, the pick of which was Kevin Murphy’s one with the outside of his right foot from an impossible angle. This rattled the Abbeyfeale side as they had no answer for the attacking football of the Athea/Mountcollins combination. Kevin Murphy exchanged a couple of points with the opposition and deep in injury time we conceded a goal to leave the final score Athea/Mountcollins Rangers 1-12, Fr.Caseys 1-10. Our next match is against Oola this Friday night in Rhebogue at 8.15pm.

U10 Division 4 (Sat, November 8th)

Broadford Utd B (0) 0

Athea Utd            (0) 2  James Broderick, own goal

Our tens, despite missing some of our regulars last Saturday morning were good value for the two nil win away to Broadford Utd B. This win now puts us level on points with Glantine and Kilcolman Rovers at the half way stage of the season. It was scoreless at half time despite chances at both ends while we had keeperDonnacha Barrett to thank for keeping Broadford out with a brilliant double save near the end of the opening half. We got going early in the second half  and made the breakthrough when James Broderick got behind the home defence and drill the ball low to the bottom right corner. We continued to press forward and got the insurance goal when a well struck shot from Evan Curry deflected off a defender and wrong footed the keeper. Overall a deserved win that leaves us in a good position at this stage of the season.

Team – Donnacha Barrett, Calum Gleeson, Michael Walsh, James Lee, James Hunt, Callum Buckley, Evan Curry, James Broderick, Ciaran Hunt.

U14 Summer League Final   (Athea v Murroe Boher)

Congratulations to The Athea U14 girls who beat Murroe/ Boher in the u14 Summer League Final on Oct 25th in Kildmo on a score line of 4g 3pts to 3g and 2pts.

We started well and had a lot of possession for the first 10 mins but we only had 2pts on the score board, both scores coming from captain Ciana Murphy. Murroe had 2 attacks in the first 10 mins both resulting in goals and tagged on a further 2pts before half time, but we two got a goal scored by Aoife Curtin just before half time. The score at half time was Athea 1g and 2pt to Murroe 2g an 2pt.

The second half was very impressive from our girls with Aibhlinn Murphy scoring a goal in the first minute of the second half to draw us level. We had an excellent second half with our backs playing outstanding football and our midfield and forwards too working very hard. Ciana scored a goal 5 mins into the second half and from there on there was no stopping the girls with Rachel too getting in on the scoring act with a great goal followed by another pt from Ciana.  Murroe scored a goal in the last 2 mins the game ended Athea 4g and 3pt to Murroe/Boher 3g and 2pt.

A great a team performance by all girls.
