Athea United Soccer

SYMPATHY

Yesterday week was a sad one for the parish of Athea when we heard of the passing of Ita Vaughan at her home in Templeathea following a long illness. For as long as I have known her Ita had a great love for soccer and been a great supporter of ours for as long as I can remember and always wanted to know how all our teams were doing. She began following the fortunes of Athea Utd when her son Joseph began playing with the club at schoolboy level and this continued when Joseph played youths and then junior soccer with Athea Utd. Ita was always in the company of her husband Joe Joe at the games and there can’t be too many grounds where we didn’t see them together supporting Athea Utd. Ita had a great knowledge of the game and if anyone was playing badly or not trying Ita was quick to point it out to us.

It’s just hard to imagine we won’t see Ita at any more Athea Utd games and it certainly won’t be the same without her. Ita was a real lady, a great friend and will be very sadly missed.

On behalf of the club I would like to extend out deepest, heartfelt sympathies to Ita’s husband Joe Joe, son Joseph, daughters Jenny and Lorraine, extended family and her many friends.

May The Light Of Heaven Shine On Her For Always.

RIP Ita.

LAST MAN STANDING

Athea Utd are again running the very popular Last Man Standing Competition for the coming season. After week three we were down to 56 players left standing and after last weekend (week 4) another 34 bit the dust, thanks to Liverpool, Man City and Spurs all failing to win and as it stands we have just 22 left in the competition.

Collins’ Bar are sponsoring our first of this season’s Last Man Standing Competitions with €300 going to the winner and the club thanks them for their sponsorship. We also have a €50 sellers prize to the person that sells the winning line.

Athea Coiste na nÓg:

Thursday October 23:

U13s:

The curtain came down on competitive action for the Coiste na nÓg when our U13s played their second and final game of the league. It was very wet and windy on the night and it was Ballylanders who had most of the possession for the entire game. Our boys kept trying until the final whistle and the highlights for us was a goal each for John Sexton and Aidan Curry and a super point from the boot of Eoin O’ Shea. At the final whistle Ballylanders were victorious and everyone enjoyed the well-earned treats in the Clubhouse afterwards.  Team: Evan Wallace, Eoin Sheahan, Alex McEldowney, Jamie O’ Mahony, TJ White, Michael Tierney, Seamus Leahy, John Sexton, Thomas McEnery, David O’ Connor, Luke Gleeson, Jack O’ Connor, Eoin O’ Shea, Colin Broderick, Aidan Curry & Jack Hunt.

Athea Schools Football:
West Limerick Final:
Athea 1-9            Broadford 4-8
The National School Team lost the West Final to Broadford on Thursday last in Mick Neville Park before a large number of supporters. We played our best football in the first half against the wind and only trailed 1-6 to 1-4 at half time. We got on top at the start of the second half but found scores hard to come by. Broadford broke up field to score a goal but we replied with points to reduce the lead to two points. Broadford again broke up field and scored another goal and they got another one shortly afterwards. We tried hard from there to the finish but we could not close the gap. The team was disappointed afterwards but they had a good campaign and did very well to reach our first Cumann na mBunscoil final in many years.
Team: Colin Broderick, Brandon Finucane, Danny Brady, Eoin Sheahan, Michael Tierney, Eoin O’ Shea, Thomas McEnery, Pierce O’ Brien, Daire O Shea, T.J. Hunt, Luke Gleeson, Gavin Ambrose, Aidan Curry, Jack Hunt, Adam Byrne and Dermot Pierse.

Congratulations:

The Club would like to congratulate the Athea ladies U14 football team who won the second trophy of the year when they defeated Murroe/Boher in the final of the Summer league on Saturday last in Kildimo.
