Wednesday October 15:

U13:

Athea 2-03               Blackrock 2-05

On Wednesday evening last our U13s made the long journey down to Martinstown to take on Blackrock in the U13 league. For some of them this was their first competitive match for a long time and it took a while for them to shake off the cobwebs. Blackrock took the lead early on with a point and shortly after doubled their score when they added a second. We were trying hard but found it difficult to make the break through and midway through the half we were caught napping at the back and conceded a goal. Things were not looking good but fair play to our young team they stepped up a gear and we got on the scoreboard when John Sexton scored a free after Jack O’ Connor had been fouled. Five minutes later John Sexton sent in a forty five and after a scramble around the goalmouth Jack O’ Connor got a boot to it and sent the ball to the back of the net. Just before half time we were all square after John Sexton pointed another free to leave the half time score Athea 1-02 Blackrock 1-02. At the start of the second half Blackrock scored a goal to go head again but we answered it well when John Sexton scored our second of the night. The home team hit a purple patch again and scored three unanswered points and looked like pulling away but our boys got going again. Jack O’ Connor drilled a low ball across the square but we could not get a boot to it and it went wide. David O’ Connor’s brilliant effort crept just over the crossbar to close the gap to two points. We had one chance left but our attack broke down and as the final whistle went the score line read Athea 2-03, Blackrock 2-05. This was a very exciting match and we are looking forward to our next match against Ballylanders this Thursday evening in Páirc na nGael at 5.45pm. Team: Evan Wallace, Eoin Sheahan, Alex McEldowney, Danny Brady, Seamus Leahy, Michael Tierney, John Sexton, Thomas McEnery, David O’ Connor, TJ White, Andrew O’ Riordan, Jack O’ Connor, Eoin O’ Shea. Jamie O’ Mahony, Luke Gleeson, Aidan Curry & Jack Hunt.

Sunday October 19:

Parish League:

Our U10 Parish League took place on Sunday afternoon last in Páirc na nGael. There was great excitement as two teams battled it out for the honors to the delight of all the parents and grandparents who had gathered to cheer on all the boys and girls. The Tigers who were playing with the strong wind in the first half started off the best and were 2-02 to no score ahead at the break. In the second half the Lions made a great comeback and as the final whistle went it was as exciting as the All-Ireland Final because the sides were all square and the match went to extra-time. This was very close and the Tigers got their nose in front early on and went in at the break slightly in front. The Lions tried hard to comeback once again but the Tigers captained by Gavin Mulvihill held on for a great win. Afterwards in the clubhouse Gavin Mulvihill accepted the Shield on behalf of his team all the Boys and Girls received medals for their mighty efforts on the field. There were loads of treats and light refreshments for all those who attended the Blitz on such a wet and windy day. The Coaches would like to thank all the Boys and Girls and their parents who came training and attended matches far and near throughout the year. It is greatly appreciated and we look forward to another exciting year in 2015. Tigers: Gavin Mulvihill, Donnchadh Barrett, Gearoid O Sullivan, James Lee, James Broderick, Evan Curry & Callum Buckley. Lions: Fergal Pierse, Daire O Shea, Shonagh O’ Mahony, Dylan Steward, Calum Gleeson, Cillian O’ Connor, Conor Fitzgerald & Rory O’ Mahony.

Athea Schools Football:
West Limerick Semi-final:
Athea 3-7       Monagea 1-4
The school boy’s football team qualified for the West Limerick final on Friday last with a great win against Monagea N.S. in Monagea. We were on top in the first half with Eoin O’ Shea and Tomas McEnery playing very well in midfield and Michael Tierney outstanding in defense. Daire O’ Shea was the pick of the forwards scoring 1-2, while Brandon Finucane also played well at the back. We led at half time 2–4 to 1-2. We started the second half well with two points from T.J. Hunt and when Daire scored our third goal, there was no way back for a gallant Monagea team. Team: Colin Broderick, Eoin Sheahan, Brandon Finucane, Michael Tierney, Danny Brady, Eoin O’ Shea, Thomas McEnery, Luke Gleeson, Daire O’ Shea, Andrew O’ Riordan, Pauric Enright, T.J.
