Recent Death

The death occurred recently of Jack Brosnan, formerly of Toureendonnell and Knocknagorna, peacefully after a brief illness. Jack passed away surrounded by his loving family. Jack is survived by his loving sister, Cathy, brothers Micheál, Tom and Jim, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, kind neighbours and a large circle of friends. Jack spent many years in England working with the Barrett family (Knockdown). He returned home in the last few years and lived in Knocknagorna with his brother Tom. Jack was a very kind man, good humoured and a great neighbour to all who knew him. He will be sorely missed, especially by his brother Tom, his family and wonderful neighbours in Knocknagorna and Toureendonnell. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

PRTB Advises First Time Students How to Avoid Paying Excessive Rent

With offers of third level college places being received in the last week by young people around the country, the  Private Residential Tenancies Board (PRTB) is reminding them that there is now authoritative information available on the actual level of rents for different types of accommodation adjacent to all universities, IT’s and other third level colleges. The information is available on the PRTB’s Rent Index, which is the most accurate and authoritative rent data source of its kind on the private accommodation sector in Ireland. Compiled by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) and based on the PRTB’s own register of 300,750 tenancies across the state, the Rent Index reveals the actual rents being paid for rental properties, as distinct from the asking rent which features in other rent reports published by other parties. This can help students and their parents to make informed decisions about the accommodation options open to them and to negotiate the best possible deal on rent. The PRTB Rent Index reveals the different rent levels across the country for different accommodation. By logging on to www.prtb.ie prospective renters can establish the monthly rent being paid.

Donie and Maura Nolan Kilcolman were the guests on the In Conversation with Weeshie Fogarty programme on Radio Kerry on Wednesday July 30th The popular hour long show is a mix of chat, and the playing of the guest’s favourite pieces of music and song. Maura took the opportunity to discuss and promote her CD Am Le Cheile- Time Together which was launched back in February. Over the hour Weeshie sought out details about her musical life and times, and how the CD came about. It was enjoyable to hear about their musical involvement over the years as the duo rarely do interviews. Athea GAA

Athea Gaa Parish Festival Tournament:

A great day was had by all who attended and took part in the Parish Festival tournament in Páirc na nGael on Sunday last. A mixture of  Minors, Junior Bs, Intermediates and a few who togged off for the first time in twenty years provide plenty of entertainment for the large crowd who were there to cheer them on. After three very exciting and close games it was the Dirreen Dynamos captained by Tim O’ Riordan who were crowned champions. The winning team was presented with their trophies afterwards in Paul Collins Bar where everyone enjoyed a well-deserved BBQ. Thursday August 21:

Intermediate Football championship:

Athea 0-13     Hospital/Herbertstown 1-12

Our Intermediates played their final game of the championship against Hospital/Herbertstown last Thursday evening in Ballingarry. This was a close game with never more than a kick of a ball between the teams. We had fine performances from Shane and Matthew Tierney in the backs, Martin and Pa Chawke at midfield, with Mark O’ Connor and Kevin O’ Keeffe causing all sort of problems for their backs. Even though we could not qualify for the knockout stages our boys gave it their all until the final whistle. We were two points down with minutes remaining and despite our best efforts we could not find the goal that would give us our second win of the championship.  The final score was Athea 0-13, Hospital/Herbertstown 1-12 and this was the end of a disappointing campaign in the Championship, however we are still in contention in the league which will be run off in the coming weeks. Team: John Cotter, Padraig Reidy, Matthew Tierney, Shane Tierney, Denis Greaney, Paul Collins, Padraig Reidy, Pa Chawke, Martin Chawke, Mark O’Connor, Jamie Collins, Kevin O’Keeffe, Padraic Walsh, Gerard Ahern, Kevin Murphy, Eoin McCarthy, Dan McMahon, Jack Denihan, Jason Dalton & William Mullane.
