Stories of History and Old Lace

Limerick Museum and Archives are planning a book and showcase on Limerick Lace for later this year and into next year and are on the search for stories, images and pieces of Limerick Lace. They will be running a demonstration class on how Limerick Lace was created during National Heritage Week from August 23rd – August 31st as well as a series of workshops planned throughout the year. Conflict Areas Need Flight Paths

Three siblings were amongst 80 children and almost 300 people it total who were killed after the Malaysia Airlines plane was shot down in the Ukraine last Thursday. The downing of Malaysian Airline MH17 with the resulting deaths of all its passengers and crew must call into question the sense of having flight paths over conflict areas. The horrific tragedy in the Ukraine shows there is an urgent need to risk-assess each and every flight path that crosses a conflict zone. Flight times and travel costs should never come into the equation when human life is at stake. We can only pray and convey our deepest sympathy to all of the families of the deceased at such a sad time for them.

80th Birthday

Best wishes to Mary Brouder, Glenbawn, who celebrates her 80th birthday this Thursday, 24th July. Wishing Mary many more happy years of good health and happiness.

Best of Luck

By Tom Aherne

The death has taken place of Mary Frawley, nee Corbett, Ballyine, Old Mill, Newcastle West, peacefully at Saint Ita’s Hospital Newcastle West on Friday July 11th. She was in her mid eighties and was the wife of the last James who died fourteen years ago. She was a native of Conigar, Askeaton, and one of three in family with two brothers, one Eddie was a past Chairman of the West Limerick G.A.A. Board. She was educated in the Primary School in Askeaton and Shrulawn Secondary School, Foynes, and she also did a secretarial course as part of her training. Mary did secretarial work for customers, and she also ran a country shop from her home, where she was very popular with all the local children.  She married James Frawley and they lived in Ballinabearna, and raised three in family. She took on the role of homemaker and looking after the needs of her family and was content with her  simple lifestyle.  She liked the occasional day out and her visit to the Tuesday Social Club in Ardagh.  The family moved to live in Ballyine a number of years ago, and she lived a long and healthy life until her move to Hospital a number of months ago.

She lay in repose at Reidy’s Funeral Home, Newcastle West on Saturday July 12th from 6pm to 8pm. Her remains arrived at Saint Molua’s Church, Ardagh on Sunday for 1pm Requiem Mass, which was concelebrated by Fr Larry Madden, Ardagh/Carrigkerry, and Fr Dan Lane, Granagh/Ballingarry. Family members and friends participated in the readings, and prayers of the faithful, and bringing the offertory gifts to the altar. Fr Larry in his homily touched on the readings, and paid tribute to Mary’s contribution to family and community life. Mary was laid to rest afterwards in the local cemetery. We extend our sympathy to her sons John, and Tom, daughter Joan, son-in-law Donal, granddaughter Ellie, cousin Pat, nephews, relatives and friends. May she rest in Peace.

The death has taken place of Mary Briget Gimblett (nee Hanley) Peterborough, England and late of Moig, Shanagolden.  She was the daughter of the late Richard and Margaret Hanley, and sister of the late William from Moig. Her Requiem Mass took place in St Peter and all Souls Roman Catholic Church, Peterborough, on Thursday July 17th and she was buried afterwards in Fletton Cemetery. We extend our sympathy to her daughter Melissa, brothers, sister, neighbours and friends. May she rest in Peace.

The death has taken place of Elizabeth (Liz) O’Sullivan, nee Sheehy, School Road, Carrigkerry at Limerick University Hospital on Monday July 14th. Wife of the late Dan she was in her mid eighties, and had suffered poor health for a number of years. She was a native of Glenduff/Clash, Athea, and one of a family of ten girls and one boy and she was the last surviving member of that family. She went to Clash National School, and worked out in service with farmers before her marriage to Dan when she was twenty five years old. They set up home in Carrigkerry and Dan was employed by the Stack family and Liz stayed at home and became a housewife and homemaker, and they had one daughter Marie. Liz was happiest at home and around the village, with family and friends. She was a regular at Stacks Lounge Bar, and Morans Tavern and liked traditional music and entertainment. Liz took a great interest in her grandchildren and supported them in their sporting activities, travelling around the country to watch them play. The decline in her health led to Liz spending her time at home in recent years. She looked forward to receiving Holy Communion from Fr Madden and would have everything in readiness for the visit. She also got lots of joy from the many honours won by Manchester Utd her favourite soccer team in recent years. Liz lived a long life and was well cared for at home, until her final days, which she would have been very thankful for. She will be sadly missed by her family and her many friends around the village.

She lay in repose at Reidy’s Funeral Home, Newcastle West on Tuesday July 15th from 6pm to 8pm, followed by removal to Saint Mary’s Church, Carrigkerry. Her Funeral Mass was concelebrated by Fr Larry Madden, Ardagh/Carrigkerry and Fr Dan Lane, Granagh/Ballingarry in St Mary’s Church on Wednesday at 11.30am. Family members brought life symbols to the altar before Mass commenced. They included a football, family portrait, candle, and a Manchester Utd jersey. Family members participated in the readings, prayers of the faithful, reflection, and bringing the offertory gifts to the altar. The hymns and music was uplifting and appropriate for the occasion. Liz was laid to rest in Kilcolman Cemetery on Wednesday July 16th. We extend our sympathy to her daughter Marie Quaid, son-in-law Paddy, grandchildren Declan, Jessie, Patrick, Catherina, and Nikita, extended family member’s relatives and friends. May she rest in Peace.

The annual Kilbradern Cemetery Mass was celebrated by Fr Denis Mullane P.P. Coolcappa/ Kilcolman on Sunday July 13th at 10am. The weather was calm warm and sunny and a good crowd attended to pray for their relatives, neighbours and friends. The choir and musicians added to the ceremony and Fr Denis blessed the graves.  The cemetery was very neat and tidy and our thanks to all who did this work and to those who participated and who helped out during the Mass.

The people of Ardagh/Carrigkerry turned out in force for the official opening of an art exhibition by three of their own artists at Newcastle West Library on Thursday evening last. Nora Kennelly,   Ardagh Cross, Fr Laurence Madden, Parochial House and Christine Greaney, Ministerland, Ardagh, combined to put twenty three of their much admired paintings on display. The trio have been creating these masterpieces over a number of years in class sessions in Abbeyfeale and also in their own time and the results are there for all to see and enjoy. There are a wide variety of landscape scenes, with delightful titles to choose from. The titles alone, The Goose Girl, Wishful Thinking, and The Gleaners, to name but three  conjure up images that make it a must see exhibition. The majority of the paintings are not for sale, but I would be thinking that Nora, Fr Larry, and Chris, would oblige by creating a similar painting. The frames that surround the paintings are high quality as well and they complement each other.

The exhibition was opened by Eileen O’Sullivan, a fellow parishioner, and a former art teacher at the Desmond College, Newcastle West. Eileen has many strings to her bow, and currently runs Black Hill Organic Garden, but still retain her great interest in art. In her address she complimented the trio on the high standard of their work and looked forward to seeing more of their creations in the future. She went through the list of paintings, giving her views and suggestions, on similar work done by other artists. She offered helpful suggestions, and directed them to try different painting styles and scenes outside their comfort zone. Fr Larry on behalf of the trio thanked their teacher Eileen Keane, the staff who laid on a cheese and wine reception, Eileen, and all who attended to support the launch. Aileen Dillane was the master of ceremonies and it was a most enjoyable evening. The exhibition will run for two week’s during opening hours, (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday 10.30 am to 5.pm, and Tuesday and Friday 10.30 am, to 8.pm.)and people are urged not to miss this opportunity to see what is on display.

A charity céilí in aid of the Irish Cancer Society will be held in the Resource Centre Knockaderry on Friday 25th July commencing at 9.30pm. Music by the Striolan Céilí Band and teas will be served. Contact Teresa at 087-9427259 or Deirdre at 086-1630201 for more details.

Matches:

Wednesday July 16: U14:

Athea 3-02  St Mary/Sean Finns 4-06
Our U14’s played St Mary/Sean Finns on Wednesday evening last in Páirc na nGael. We got off to a great start when Andy Ahern converted a penalty after Pierce O’ Brien was fouled in the square. The visitors got going after that and dominated for the rest of the half building up a big lead by half time. We were much improved in the second half as our backs tightened up and our midfield started to get on top. John Sexton tapped over for a great point after five minutes and soon after Jack O’ Connor was straight through on goals but was fouled in the square for a penalty. John Sexton stepped up and scored our second goal of the night from the spot. St Mary/Sean Finns hit back with a goal and a couple of points but Daniel McEldowney rose the white flag for Athea again. We tried hard to get scores but time was running out. A fine goal by Jack O’ Connor late on helped close the gap but the opposition held on to win on a score line of Athea 3-02, St Mary/Sean Finns 4-06.  Team:  Cathal O’ Brien, Danny Brady, Micheál Dalton, Joseph Dalton, Jamie O’ Mahony, John Sexton, David O’ Connor, Andy Ahern, Seamus Leahy, Luke Glasson, TJ White, Thomas McEnery, Andrew O’ Riordan, Jack O’ Connor, Pierce O’ Brien, Daniel McEldowney & Aidan Curry.

Thursday July 17th: U12:

Athea 4-07     Glin 3-10

Athea U12’s took on near neighbours Glin in Páirc na nGael on Thursday evening last. It was a lovely evening for football and it was Glin who got the better start scoring a goal and a few points. Athea’s only score in the first half came from the boot of Luke Gleeson when he scored a great point. We went in eleven points down at the break and a mountain to climb in the second half. The half time talk by the coaches worked wonders as this young team came out all guns blazing. A goal by Eoin O’ Shea was soon followed by a point from Michael Tierney. Both sides exchanged points but our defence stood strong, Danny Brady and Pierce O’ Brien were playing out of their skins. Aidan Curry was on hand to fist the ball to the net to narrow the gap. Glin responded with a goal and a couple of points but our team came back again. Luke Gleeson and Eoin O’ Shea scored a goal each. Aidan Curry tapped over two great points to leave just a point between the teams. Time was running out but a super point by Andrew O’ Riordan levelled the match to leave the final score Athea 4-07 Glin 3-10. Panel: Brandon Finucane, Pierce O’ Brien, Danny Brady, Alex McEldowney, Andrew O’ Riordan, Thomas McEnery, Luke Gleeson, Eoin O’ Shea, Jack Hunt, Sarah O’ Connor, Adam Byrne, Aidan Curry, Colin Broderick, Michael Tierney, Gavin Ambrose & Dermot Pierse.
