Sunday June 15:
5K Fun Run/Adventure Run:
On a glorious Sunday afternoon, well over a hundred competitors took part in our 5k Fun Run/Adventure Run. With Páirc na nGael looking extremely well there was a great atmosphere as all the men, ladies, mothers, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers, children and babies all gathered from twelve noon in preparation for the run. On the stroke of two, John Hunt began the countdown and the Fun Run Competitors headed up the road and around the ring and the Adventure Run Competitors did a lap of the field before embarking over ropes, bales, under nets and various other obstacles including a slide down into the river Gale before returning to Páirc na nGael. There were plenty of water stations around the course to help everyone cope with the hot weather and thankfully everyone made it back to the clubhouse safe and sound. Later on in the evening the prizes were presented at Paul Collins’ shop and bar where everyone enjoyed a well-deserved BBQ treat. The Club would like to thank all those who helped out in anyway in making this day such a great success. Matches:
Friday June 13: Under 10:
Our under 10 footballers travelled to the Bog Garden in Rathkeale on Friday evening last to take part in a Blitz. Playing teams from Fr. Caseys, Dromcollogher/Broadford and St. Mary/Sean Finns our boys did very well. We had a good turnout of sixteen players in the maroon and white and their hand passing soloing, kicking and crouch lifting is improving with every match they play and every training session they attend. Well done to all our players and their coaches. A big thank you to the parents for making the trip to Rathkeale. We would also like to thank St.Marys/Sean Finns for hosting the blitz and for the treats afterwards. Training continues this Friday evening at 6pm in Páirc na nGael. Panel: Gavin Mulvihill, James Broderick, Daire O’Shea, Calum Gleeson, Conor Fitzgerald, Fergal Pierse, Evan Curry, Gearoid O’Sullivan, Callum Buckley, Michael Walsh, Cillian O’Connor, Conor Mullane, Dylan Steward, James Lee, Donnchadh Barrett & Rory O’Mahony.
Monday June 16: U14:
Athea 3-09 Granagh/Ballingarry 5-05
Our U14’s travelled to Ballingarry to take on the locals in the second round of the league. We started brightly when T.J White opened the scoring after a couple of minutes. The home side equalised, but soon after John Sexton rose the white flag, he then rose the green flag after a great pass from Luke Gleeson to give us a four point lead. We conceded two more points, but a super point from Jack O’ Connor kept us in front. We suffered a major blow when we were hit with two goals by Granagh/Ballingarry, but our boys responded well. Cathal O’Brien was steady in goals, our full back line of David O’Sullivan, Micheál Dalton and Jamie O’Mahony tightened up, our half back line of David O’Connor and the McEldowney brothers Daniel and Alex were always there to support our midfield pairing of Seamus Leahy and Shane Ambrose who worked tirelessly throughout the match. Our forwards were causing trouble for their backs. Three points in quick succession from Joseph Dalton, Jack O’Connor and John Sexton had us level. Then just before the break Joseph Dalton was fouled in the box and John Sexton made no mistake converting the resulting penalty to leave us three points ahead at half time. We were first to score in the second half thanks to the boot of John Sexton, but once again we lapsed and the home side scored two goals and a point to go three points up. John Sexton reduced the lead to two when he scored another great point but the opposition added a goal and a point to go six ahead with five minutes remaining. Our team did not give up; Jason Dillon tapped over a great point and shortly afterwards John Sexton scored his second goal of the match to leave just two between the sides. We tried hard for our fourth goal but we ran out of time and the final score was Athea 3-09 Granagh/Ballingarry 5-05. This was a major improvement on our first match with five of our six forwards scoring from play. We now look forward to our next match in a couple of weeks’ time and if the team keep improving they will no doubt get their first win of the campaign. Team: Cathal O’Brien, David O’Sullivan, Micheál Dalton, Jamie O’Mahony, David O’Connor, Daniel McEldowney, Alex McEldowney. Shane Ambrose, Seamus Leahy, Luke Gleeson, Jason Dillon, Joseph Dalton, TJ White, John Sexton, Jack O’Connor Danny Brady and Sean Sheehan.
