Junior B Football Championship:
Athea 1-10 Ballysteen 2-08
Our Junior B’s made the short journey to Ballyhahill to take on Ballysteen in the first round of the championship on Wednesday evening last. With our biggest panel of the year togged out with a mixture of youth and experience we took the game to Ballysteen from the throw in and we were soon on the score board when Darren Murphy and Brian Murphy both scored great points. Following a point from Ballysteen, Nelius Hunt scored a super long range point to keep us two ahead. Ballysteen came back and scored three points of their own but Sean McGrath tapped over a free to level matters again. We then conceded a goal and a point but the very lively Neilo Keane showed his class when he split the posts with a great point. Just before half time a great sideline kick from Darren Murphy was fisted to the net by the very experienced Denis Collins to leave the half time score 1-05 apiece. At the start of the second half we went ahead again when Nelius Hunt pointed after a great pass from Chris Hayes. The opposition scored two points of their own but two points from Sean McGrath and a point each for Jason Quille and Nelius Hunt left us with a three point lead heading into the closing stages. Ballysteen scored a point and piled on the pressure for the final few minutes and despite our best efforts they scored a goal on the stroke of full time to leave the final score Athea 1-10 Ballysteen 2-08.
Even though we lost by a point this was a super performance and a massive improvement on our previous outing. Under the management of Morgan O’ Connor this team will continue to improve and will no doubt reach the latter stages of the championship.
Team:Kieran Harnett, Neilo Keane, Michael Ahern, Garry Carroll, Gary Vaughan, Chris Hayes, Tommy Quaid, Jason Quille, Neilus Hunt, Brian Murphy, Sean McGrath, Brian Ahern, Darren Murphy, Denis Collins, Steven McEnery, Dan McMahon, Jason Dalton, Paul Mahony, John Cotter, John Geoghegan & Jack Denihan.
