Matches:
Thursday June 15:
Junior B League:
Athea Junior B’s played a very strong St. Marys/Sean Finns in the Bog garden on Thursday evening last. Despite the best efforts of all who togged out the home team ran out easy winners at the final whistle: Team:Roger Ryan, Eoin McCarthy, Michael Ahern, Jason Dalton, Garry Carroll, Emmet White, Brian Murphy, Sean Ahern, Neilus Hunt, Neilo Keane, Brian Ahern, Dan McMahon, Liam O’Brien, Denis Collins & Steven McEnery.
Sunday June 18:
Intermediate Football Championship:
Athea 1-07 Mountcollins 2-14
Our Intermediate team played Mountcollins in Abbeyfeale in the second round of the Championship on Sunday evening last. A huge crowd of supporters from both parishes made the short journey to Fr. Caseys GAA club as this was a must win game for both teams. Athea started brightly with Jamie Collins opening the scoring when he blasted the ball over the bar after a great pass from Jonathan Fitzgerald. Mountcollins were on level terms soon after but Kevin Murphy scored a great point to edge us in front again. A pointed free from Gerard Ahern increased our lead, but Mountcollins scored a free of their own to bring it back to a one point game. Our best move of the match began when Jamie Collins won a great ball on the forty five meter line, turned his man and headed for goal, he then passed it to Pa Chawke who laid it off to Shane Mulvihill who buried the ball into the back of the net to the delight of the huge Athea support. Unfortunately we surrendered our lead before half time as Mountcollins stepped up a gear to score five unanswered points to go in at the break 0-7 to Athea’s 1-03 up and it could have been more only for a great save by Timmy Enright in goals. The second half belonged to Mountcollins as a converted penalty and a well taken point early in the half extended their lead. Gerard Ahern narrowed the gap with two pointed frees, but the opposition went on and scored a goal and five points before we could register our next score which was a forty five from the boot of Gerard Ahern. As we ran out of steam Mountcollins powered on to score three more points. The last score of the game was a point from Kevin Murphy to leave the final score Athea 1-07, Mountcollins 2-14. Overall this was a very disappointing result and a big improvement is needed as we face Gerald Griffins in the next round of the Championship in three weeks’ time. I have no doubt in my mind that our boys will bounce back and get back on the right track for the rest of the Championship. Best on the night were Jamie Collins, Paul Collins, Timmy Enright & Shane Mulvihill. Team:Timmy Enright, Padraig Reidy, Paul Collins, Michael Reidy, Dylan Griffin, Matthew Tierney, Denis Greaney, Mark O’Connor, Jonathan Fitzgerald, Shane Mulvihill, Gerard Ahern, Pa Chawke, Conor Mullane, Jamie Collins, Kevin Murphy, Raymond Brouder, Kevin Mahony, Kevin O’ Keeffe, Shane Tierney, Neilo Keane, Dan McMahon & Eoin McCarthy.
