Sincere congrats and good wishes go to Jamie Morrissey of Ballaugh (grandson of Mick Leach and the late Kit Leach, Cratloe East and son of Helen & Paul Morrissey) who was married on Friday last to Claire Foley (daughter of Chris & John, Knocknasna). The bride was assisted by her sister Jackie O’Connor and Katie Morrissey. Best man was Daniel Morrissey and groomsman was Adrian Foley. Flowergirls were Eva O’Connor and Addison Foley and the pageboys were Connor Leach and Archer Foley. The ceremony and reception took place at The Woodlands House Hotel, Adare where everyone had a great day. Best wishes to the newlyweds.

A good crowd of interested sellers and buyers attended the fair in the village on Sunday last, with cattle, horses and donkeys sold and bought. The day, thankfully, held up ok not like Saturday which was a wash-out!

Well what can one say about the Community Games basketball semi-finals and finals which were held here in the sports hall on Saturday morning last, only that they were a delight to watch. The semi-finals started after 10am and big crowds from various parishes were in attendance. Well done to the U11s mixed team who, despite losing in the final to Drom/Broadford, put on one of the most amazing games at such a ‘rapid pace’ – all played brilliantly with captain Daire O’Shea playing an unbelievable game. Next it was the turn of the U13 girls who had a great win over Regional and are now into the Munster finals in UL in the near future. Anthony Fitzsimons presented the medals to the teams, much to the delight of players and parents alike. Well done to Trish Aherne for her dedication and many training hours with the teams. And isn’t it great that we here in Athea are able to host these finals with the brilliant sports hall we have – one of the best around!

Well it’s a big day this Saturday for the girls and boys of Athea N.S. Who will be receiving their First Holy Communion in Athea Church – hopefully it will be a nice day for them all. Then on Wednesday next it’s the turn of the Confirmation classes 5th & 6th who will be confirmed by Bishop Brendan Leahy – again another big day in their lives. We wish them all well especially 6th class who will shortly be finishing their years at Athea N. S.

“A Storm in the Heart” featuring Dolores Keane telling her life story and her drink addiction was really touching on RTE 1 tonight, a marvellous singer in her day who also battled cancer.
