County Intermediate Football League:

Athea 0-11    Na Piarsaigh 1-07

Athea Intermediates had a hard fought win over Na Piarsaigh in their final match of the group stages of the league in Páirc na nGael on Tuesday evening last. Gerard Ahern opened the scoring with a point after five minutes and soon after Denis Greaney rose the white flag to put us two up. Scores were hard to come by but Gerard Ahern extended our lead with a great point. Midway through the half the visitors got their first point of the day but Gerard Ahern was on the mark again with another point. Just before half time both sides exchanged points, Pa Chawke getting his name on the scoreboard for Athea to leave us three to the good at the break. Both teams scored early on in the second half with two points each. From then on Athea were guilty of some wayward shooting. Several scoring opportunities were wasted by our boys, meanwhile Na Piarsaigh tapped over a few points to close the gap to a point with ten minutes to go. We eventually found our scoring touch in the last five minutes, Gerard Ahern with two points and Kevin Mahony with one to give us a four point lead. A late goal for the city side was not enough and we won on a score line of Athea 0-11, Na Piarsaigh 1-07. Team: Timmy Enright, Eoin McCarthy, Paul Collins, Michael Reidy, Denis Greaney, Dylan Griffin, Raymond Brouder, Jamie Collins, Mark O’ Connor, Ryan Carroll, Shane Mulvihill, Pa Chawke, Kevin Mahony, Gerard Ahern, Sean McGrath, Conor Mullane, Sean McGrath, Matthew Tierney & Dan McMahon.

Saturday April 26:

Intermediate Football Championship:

Round One:

Athea 1-05    Feohanagh/Castlemahon 0-12

Our Intermediate team made the short journey to Abbeyfeale to take on Feohanagh/Castlemahon in the first round of the Championship. This was always going to be a tough match as we were missing a few players due to injury and Feohanagh/Castlemahon are current County Junior A Champions and also reached the Junior A Munster final last year. We started brightly and it was not long before we scored, when Jamie Collins fired over a great point after being set up by Patrick Ahern. As the rain poured down it was hard for either team to get a foot hold in the game. Ten minutes into the match we suffered a major blow when Patrick Ahern came off injured after he nearly scored a goal for Athea. Midway through the half Feohanagh/Castlemahon scored three points to go two up, but Gerard Ahern pointed a free after Jamie Collins had been fouled. Another point for the opposition just before half time left us trailing by two points at the break with the half time score reading Athea 0-02, Feohanagh/Castlemahon 0-04. We got off to a good start in the second half when we were soon back on level terms when Conor Mullane and Gerard Ahern both rose white flags. Feohanagh/Castlemahon went ahead again with a point of their own, but Pa Chawke split the posts after a great pass from Shane Mulvihill to level the match once again. Unfortunately from an Athea point of view that was to be our last score until the final minutes of the match. Meanwhile Feohanagh/Castlemahon scored seven unanswered points and a great save by Raymond Brouder on the goal line denied them a certain goal. Our boys tried hard but failed to break down Feohanagh/Castlemahon’s tight marking defence. In the final minute Jamie Collins set up Kevin Mahony who scored a fine goal to leave the final scored Athea 1-05, Feohanagh/Castlemahon 0-12. Our next match is against Mountcollins in the second round of the Championship, who also lost their first match to St.Senans, so it is a must win for both teams and one not to be missed. Best on the night were Raymond Brouder, Jamie Collins, Michael Reidy and Gerard Ahern. Team: Timmy Enright, Raymond Brouder, Tom Collins, Michael Reidy, Mark O’ Connor, Padraig Reidy, Denis Greaney, Jonathan Fitzgerald, Conor Mullane, Shane Mulvihill, Jamie Collins, Pa Chawke, Gerard Ahern, Patrick Ahern, Kevin Murphy, Kevin Mahony, Paul Collins, Kevin O’ Keeffe, Eoin McCarthy, Shane Tierney, Matthew Tierney, Sean McGrath, Dan McMahon & Neilo Keane.

U15’s:

Athea U15’s have qualified for the County final for the second year in a row following a convincing win over Kildimo/Pallaskenry in Páirc na nGael on Wednesday last. On a showery evening, Micheál Ambrose was first on the score board when he scored two great points from play. Kildimo/Pallaskenry responded with a goal but we were soon level when Liam McAuliffe fired over the equaliser. We went a point ahead when Micheál Ambrose got Athea’s fourth point of the match and just before half time Jamie O’ Brien found the back of the net after great work by Brian Sheahan to leave the half time score Athea 1-4 to Kildimo/Pallaskenry 1-00. In the second half, Jamie O’ Brien extended our lead with a point and shortly afterwards Brian Sheahan got our second goal of the night. Alan Kelly was next to score when he rose the white flag before Feohanagh/Castlemahon scored two great points of their own. Andy Ahern put the result beyond doubt when he scored our third goal of the night and just before the full time whistle Brian Sheahan scored a point to leave the final score Athea 3-07, Kildimo/Pallaskenry 1-02. Team: Cathal O’ Brien, Jack Vaughan, Micheál Dalton, Mark McAuliffe, Jamie O’Brien, Cillian Liston, Shane Ambrose, Sean Ryan, Micheál Ambrose, Liam McAuliffe, Alan Kelly, Daniel McEldowney, David O’Connor, Brian Sheahan, John Sexton, Jack O’ Connor & Andy Ahern.

We wish we could give them more. Panel: Danny Brady, Alex McEldowney, Sarah O’ Connor, Pierce O’ Brien, Paraic Enright, Andrew O’ Riordan, Dermot Pierse, Sarah Scanlon, TJ Hunt, Amy Ryan, Eoin Sheahan, Brandon Finucane, Luke Gleeson, Gavin Ambrose, Nicola Scanlon, Eoin O’ Shea, Jack Hunt, Meadhbh Donovan, Evan Wallace, Michael Tierney, Thomas McEnery, Aidan Curry & Colin Broderick.
