Athea GAA
Matches:
Saturday March 22:
County Intermediate League:
Athea 4-14 Galtee Gaels 1-07.
Athea Intermediates played their first game of the league against Galtee Gaels and came away with a very comprehensive win on a cold and windy day in Páirc na nGael. In an evenly contested first half it was Gerard Ahern and Pat Ahern had us two points up after five minutes. The visitors were soon back on level terms with two points of their own, but Pat Ahern edged us in front again when he rose the white flag. Westretched our lead with three pointed frees from the boot of Gerard Ahern as our forwards were causing trouble for their backs. Galtee Gaels responded with two points of their own and it could have been more only for a good save from Jonathan Fitzgerald in goals. Great work by Kevin Mahony out in the wing saw him dispossess his marker, he then passed the ball of to Pat Ahern who released Jamie Collins and he made no mistake scoring Athea’s first goal of the match. Two points just before the break for Galtee Gaels left just a goal between the teams. In the second half, the visitors were soon on level terms when our backs were caught napping and they raised the green flag giving Jonathan Fitzgerald no chance in goals. This was the wake up call our team needed and they stepped up a gear and totally dominated the rest of the match out scoring Galtee Gaels 3-08 to 0-01. Our defenders tightened up and made it difficult for the opposition to try and score. Our midfield pairing of Pat Chawke and Jamie Collins also played well covering a lot of ground in each half defending and attacking. Our forwards could do no wrong in this half and points from Gerard Ahern, Kevin Murphy, Jamie Collins, Pat Ahern and Denis Greaney were backed up by three great goals from Gerard Ahern, Denis Greaney and Kevin Mahony. This was a great performance after the disappointment of the first two games and we look forward to our match away to Glin this Saturday at 3pm. All Support would be greatly appreciated. Team: Jonathan Fitzgerald, Michael Reidy, Matthew Tierney, Raymond Brouder, Conor Mullane, Paul Collins, Dylan Griffin, Pa Chawke, Jamie Collins, KevinMahony, Patrick Ahern, Denis Greaney, Sean McGrath, Gerard Ahern, Neilo Kean, Dan McMahon, Kevin Murphy, Shane Tierney, JohnGeoghegan & Garry Carroll.
