FAI JUNIOR CUP

Athea Utd      (0) 1    Kevin O’Keeffe

Avenue Utd   (2) 3

It was FAI Junior Cup action at The Vales last Sunday as we competed in the blue riband competition of Irish soccer for the first time in over a decade when we welcomed Clare Premier League Champions Avenue Utd to our excellently laid out grounds at The Vales. Played before a good sized crowd we began well and came very close inside the opening minute when in form striker Kevin O’Keeffe saw his shot strike the Avenue crossbar. Within three minutes the Clare side were ahead when their midfielder struck a cracker from the right edge of the box which nestled inside the left-hand post. The opposition were passing the ball well and it wasn’t until the last 15 minutes of the first half did we start to get on the ball more and it was in this timeframe when we had our next chance when left sided midfielder Kevin Murphy saw his shot just deflected wide for a corner. Then two minutes from half time controversy. The ball clearly having gone out of play on the Avenue side of the pitch but their linesman kept the flag down and they went up the pitch before eventually scoring their second goal.

The second half saw Avenue continue to dominate in the possession stakes and they could have extended their lead on a few occasions. The best of these coming when they hit the side netting after a long clearance from their keeper after he initially gathered the ball under severe pressure from Tom Collins following a Gerard Ahern free kick. With nineteen minutes left we were back in the game when O’Keeffe deservedly got on the score sheet for his work rate alone, Joe Vaughan began it when he picked out Gerard Ahern and he played a through ball for O’Keeffe who rounded the keeper Healey before coolly slotting home from an acute angle. We were back in it now, despite our limited possession but six minutes later they added a third after a quickly taken free kick.
