Knockdown News-30/10/13

I read Tom Wall’s book last week and found it to be a very interesting read. Tom spoke about the awfulness of being in Glin Industrial school but to be fair to him he also lifted the mood with some very funny incidents which happened in his time there. It is a book which is well worth reading and holding on to for posterity to remind ourselves of the way life was for all of us pre 1960’s but especially for all the pupils of industrial schools nationwide. It is on sale in all local shops for €15.

This is Halloween week which is turning out to be a much more commercialised affair in recent years. “Back in our day” it was a very simple time; there was the apple and/or coins and a basin of water and bowl of flour game; or we might have a turnip in which a face had been hollowed out and a candle placed within. I notice now that costumes are bought for the children and it is a ghoulish time, more in keeping with pagan customs, which is where the idea came from anyway but was christianised along the way. But the biggest change, in my mind, is that though Halloween is not til this coming Thursday night it has been celebrated last weekend in most areas. Wonder what the next generation again will do?

Well done to Julia O’Rourke, a senior speech and language therapist, formerly of Ballyhahill, who was  presented with Enterprise Ireland-Cleveland Clinic prize by Minister Bruton on Wednesday October 23rd. Julia is the brainchild behind a software reminiscence therapy for sufferers of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia called Rempad which has won the Clinical Innovation Award 2013, sponsored by Enterprise Ireland and Cleveland Clinic. Rempad is a new software tool which uses multi-media content to connect carers and residents with memories from the past to enhance the overall wellbeing of nursing home residents suffering from Alzheimer’s.

A lovely exhibition of paintings by Pauline Sharp, Glenbawn, Ballyhahill is being held in Glin library from next Tuesday Nov 5th. Pauline specialises in animals especially horses and her work is greatly admired throughout the world at this stage as her paintings have been sold in all continents through the medium of the internet. We wish her continued success. You can see her work on www.redbubble/people/paulinesharp

Congratulations to Estuary Macra Club for winning the “Best emerging Club of the Year” in Carlow last weekend. Well done to this energetic group who set up the club in the past year or so.

By Carrig Side-30/10/2013

The death has taken place following an accident of Thomas (Tom) O’Sullivan, 8 Saint Mary’s Terrace, Carrigkerry on Friday 18th October. His sudden passing in his early sixties caused widespread sorrow and sadness, around the locality.  Very large crowds attended his residence where he lay in repose, and at his Funeral Mass to pay their respects to the very popular family. Tom was a native of Carrigkerry and employed as caretaker at The Cheshire Home. He was son of John Joe and Helen, both deceased, and one of nine in family. He was educated in Carrigkerry N.S. and he worked also for many years at Murphy’s Joinery in Askeaton. Tom was a hard worker who possessed a gifted pair of hands capable of doing any task that needed doing. He had a keen interest in farming and the morning of his death he was after tending his animals before going to work. He married his wife Nellie Enright from Athea and this year celebrates their 41st anniversary. They raised six children and Tom was very committed to family and delighted when his grandchildren arrived in recent years. His faith meant a lot to him and he was highly regarded by all at his workplace.  Tom loved horses and attending the various fairs with friends. He cut a lot of timber over the years, as well as other outdoor tasks. He enjoyed tapes of ceili music, calling to people as well as time spent with his legion of friends. The passing of a person causes widespread disruption and adjustment amongst family relatives and friends and Tom will be sadly missed by all.

He lay in repose at his residence from 4pm to 7pm on Sunday evening with removal on Monday to Saint Mary’s Church, Carrigkerry for 11.30am Requiem Mass. Fr Larry Madden concelebrated with Fr Mulvihill, Croagh/Kilfinny, Fr Irwin, Knockaderry/Clouncagh, and Fr Bowen, Athea. Before Mass commenced symbols associated with Tom’s life were taken to the Altar. A horseshoe for his love of horses, a CD to show his love of music, a family photo for his love of family and a sod of turf to show his willingness for hard work. Family members participated in the ceremony and Margaret and Donie supplied lovely hymns and tunes. Tom was laid to rest beneath a watery sky in Holy Cross Cemetery, Athea, on Monday 21st October. We extend our sympathy to his wife Nellie, sons John, Michael, Thomas and Pa, daughters Helen, and Elizabeth, brothers, Donal, John, James, and Noel, sisters, Mary, Joan, Kathleen, and Eileen and extended family members, relatives and friends. May he rest in Peace.

The death has also taken place of James Stack, Ballinlonig, Dromcollogher. He lay in repose at Sexton’s Funeral Home, Broadford from 6pm on Saturday evening followed by removal to Saint Bartholomew’s Church Dromcollogher.  His Requiem Mass was on Sunday 20th October at 12.30pm, followed by burial in Springfield Cemetery. We extend our sympathy to his wife Mary, sons John, Martin, Richard, James, and Anthony, daughters Rena Culhane, Margaret Hegarty and Evelyn, sister Kathleen Ryan (Coolacokera, Ardagh) sister-in-law Una Mangan, (Dunmore, Galway)sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives and a wide circle of friends. His wife Mary was the former Mary Barry from Barnigue, Carrigkerry daughter of Martin and Kathleen, who were teachers in Clounleharde School.  They gave over 80 years teaching there between them with Kathleen retiring in 1960 and Martin in 1966.His daughter Evelyn is a teacher in Carrigkerry and Kilcolman schools. May he rest in Peace.

Stephen Goulding, son of John and Mary, Carrigkerry, will be standing for the Labour Party in next year’s Limerick County Council local elections which will be held in May.  He is presently living with his wife and family in Newcastle West and is very involved in community and volunteering and would be a great asset and a strong voice for our area.  He is presently the Deputy Principal of Listowel Community College, after a number of years spent teaching  in Desmond College Newcastle West. Stephen is also National Treasurer of the Principals & Deputy Principals association of the TUI. He is a member of Newcastle West & District Lions Club, Newcastle West AFC and the Arra Players Drama group. He is also a Board member of West Limerick Resources since 2010 and was appointed to the board of Leargas last year by Minister Ruairi Quinn. Stephen is also a Volunteer broadcaster on West Limerick 102 and presents a weekly Sunday review programme.

Stephen has been working hard over the past 5 years in an area rep role. At a local level he fought hard to retain the CE Scheme in Carrigkerry when it was under threat last year. He also helped pilot the Carrigkerry Playground Committee’s application for the playground through West Limerick Resources and they have been provisionally granted 103 k for the project.  Stephen has worked through his many contacts to secure Adaption grants for elderly people in our locality. Recently the new Saint Vincent de Paul building was granted 300k to build units in Newcastle West. Stephen worked with the local group to secure the funding to build these units after 10 years of trying by SVP. Also the local Energy Efficiency initiative is now in estates in Newcastle West & Abbeyfeale and Stephen secured people getting on to the scheme. He has also asked the Minister to send this scheme to rural estates across West limerick that are badly in need of insulation and this will be a priority for 2014.

Stephen would be a strong voice locally for our area if elected as this area has only had residual representation as it was at the periphery of the Rathkeale Electoral area. It is now fully embedded in the newly enlarged Newcastle electoral area. Knowing Stephen he would do his best to represent all people regardless of their party politics.  It would be most important to have a local person elected to ensure that an adequate share of council funding is spent in our area continuously and not just at elections. He can be contacted on 0877441185/06977630 if people wish to avail of his services. Stephen is wished well in his campaign in the coming months, and it would be great to see a Carrigkerry man elected to Limerick County Council.

Congratulations to Sean Goulding from Carrigkerry who recently published This Haunted Island which is on sale in Newcastle West Bookstore. Sean is a philosophy graduate who has taught in Ireland, Yemen and Saudi Arabia.  He is living in Saudi Arabia at present but will be back in Ireland next January. The following lines give the reader a flavour of the book; In Ireland we take an especial interest in the paranormal. Most people, with a little prompting, will eventually admit that they, or someone they know, once had a run-in with the unknown. While tales of banshees, leprechauns and fairies have become extremely rare today (a fact reflected in this book), accounts of omens of death, of houses plagued by poltergeists and unquiet spirits, and of spook lights on lonely roads abound in early twenty first century Ireland. Some people recount uplifting and reassuring stories of contact with departed loved ones. While it may well be true that ‘everyone has a book in them’, it seems almost certain that just about everybody has a ghost story in them…..It is published by www.choicepublishing.ie. And it promises to be a very enjoyable read and it costs €12.
