“Come on Limerick”

Well the flags are flying in anticipation of the much looked forward to all important game for the Limerick hurlers on Sunday next, it should be a “cracker” and no doubt our County will be bereft of people on Sunday all heading to Croke Park. Hopefully we will have a great result on Sunday evening – fingers crossed.

More happy events these past few days. On Friday last Michael Brosnan, son of Eileen and Micheál, was married to Marie O’Keeffe in Duagh Parish Church. Everyone had a great day at The Devon Inn. And recently Ciara Murphy daughter of Val and Dr Kieran Murphy was married in Lanzarote to Alan Horan of Cork. Families, relatives and friends travelled ‘to the sun’ to celebrate the happy occasion with the newlyweds. We congratulate the happy couples and wish them all the best for the future.

There were two ‘60th’ birthdays in Athea also at the weekend. Tom Riordan and his twin sister Eileen of Dirreen celebrated at Donie’s with friends and relations, all having a great night. Joan Dunlavy (Cleary) of Templeathea, who has retired home to Athea from England, also celebrated her 60th having a surprise visit from her son and daughter in England for the occasion. Congratulations to the two birthday people.

A lovely day was enjoyed by the Barrett and O’Connell families and their extended families at the Memorial Hall on Sunday last. It was a very special occasion to mark the retirement of both John Joe Barrett and John O’Connell who had done great work over the years with the Athea Credit Union since it began and what a great asset it has been to our Community.

Timmy Woulfe acted as M.C. and both John Joe and John were presented with beautiful watches and Kitty Barrett who had also done great work behind the scenes was presented with a lovely bouquet of flowers. After the private reception all were invited to teas, coffees and all sorts of cakes and buns etc supplied by Colleen Reidy. Photos were a plenty. We congratulate these two dedicated men who gave of their time and energy over many years to Athea Credit Union and wish them the best of health and happiness for the future.

Well done to the Athea Intermediates who had a great win again on Sunday evening last against Croom winning 2-12 to 2-7 hopefully they will keep on a “winning streak” now.
