The death has taken place unexpectedly of Jeremiah (Gerdy) Murphy, Rooska West, Carrigkerry, at Limerick University Hospital on Saturday 10^th August. He was a retired farm worker in his mid seventies. He was one of five in family and he was predeceased by his sister Nell. Jerdy attended Ballyloughane National School and worked with local farmers doing the manual work around the farm that was necessary at the time.  He spent some time working in England but returned to his native place to resume his work on the land with local farmers and contractors. He was highly regarded as a tractor driver and much sought after for the silage harvesting.  Jerdy was a great supporter of Saint Kieran’s when they were one of the top sides in the county in the seventies and eighties. In recent years he attended many vintage gatherings with his tractor around the locality. His house was his castle, and he had upgraded the yard and sheds in recent times. He also had a good supply of fuel in his shed for the upcoming winter months. He was a well known figure, in the village and beyond and his passing is very much regretted by all who knew him, and he will be sadly missed.

He lay in repose at Reidy’s Funeral Home, Newcastle West on Monday 12^th August from 6.30pm, followed by removal to Saint Mary’s Church, Carrigkerry. Fr Larry Madden celebrated his Funeral Mass on Tuesday at 11.30am. Family members assisted in the Readings, prayers of the faithful, and offertory gifts and Donie and Maura supplied the appropriate hymns and music. Gerdy was laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery, Newcastle West on Tuesday 13^th August. The community turned out in force at the removal and Funeral Mass to pay their respects, and bid him farewell.  We extend our sympathy to his sisters, Beatrice, and Kitty, brother, Sean, nieces, nephews, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, other relatives, neighbours and friends. May he rest in Peace.

The death has also taken place of Charlie McCarthy, Moig, who lived on the main Kilcolman to Shanagolden road. He was a retired member of the farming community and was a patient in Saint Ita’s Hospital, Newcastle West in recent years. He lay in repose at Ferris’s Funeral Home, Shanagolden on Monday 12^th August, from 7pm followed by removal to Saint Senan’s Church, Shanagolden. His Funeral Mass was celebrated on Tuesday 13^th August at 12 noon followed by burial in Relig Mhuire Cemetery, Askeaton. We extend our sympathy to his relatives, friends, and neighbours, May he rest in Peace.

A lot of anxious students received their Leaving Cert results which were out on Wednesday 14^th August. We congratulate all on their achievements and wish them well in their future careers.

The month of August is a popular time for graveyard Masses, and a large crowd was present at Ardagh Graveyard for the annual Mass and rounds at Saint Molua’s Well on Monday 5^th August. A nice crowd was present at historic Knockpatrick Cemetery on Sunday 11^th August for the annual Mass. It was dry and windy and the view from the hill top there was spectacular.

The Irish Pilgrimage Trust would like to thank everyone who contributed to their church gate collection which was taken up in Ardagh/Carrigkerry on Saturday/Sunday 10^th /11^th August.  A total of € 397.65 was collected which will help greatly in sending children with special needs to Lourdes next Easter.

Saint Kieran’s defeated Pallasgreen by 1-10 to 0-6 in Round 3 of Group 1 of the County Senior Football Championship in Clarina Gaelic Grounds on Saturday 10^th August. The team was well supported on a perfect evening for football. The teams were level at 4 points each at half-time, as Pallasgreen dominated the play around the centre of the field and exposed gaps in the Saints defence. Saint Kieran’s were far more committed and hard working in the second half with Timmy Carroll dominant in the centre of the field. They took the game to their East opponents, with strong running and good passing yielding a succession of points. Jack Ben Harnett kicked 4 points from play over the hour in one of his best ever displays for the team. Anthony Molyneaux scored a fine goal to put the game beyond Pallasgreen who scored only 2 points in the late stages of the second half. Saint Kieran’s as a result have moved closer to booking a place in the knockout stages of the Championship. Saint Kieran’s defeated Drom-Broadford by 0-11 to 0-7 in Round 5 of the West Junior B Football Championship at Coolyroe on Sunday 11^th August. They won all five matches in their group to finish top and are through to the semi-final as a result.

Saint Kieran’s/Rathkeale lost to Askeaton by 5-15 to 3-7 in the West Minor Hurling Championship at the Bog Garden Rathkeale on Thursday 8^th August. The team remains pointless after three defeats to date.

Congratulations to John Shine Old Mill, who was the winner of the €250 bonus prize in the Newcastle West Rugby Club lottery draw held in Lee’s Bar Newcastle West on Friday 9^th August.

The Irish Wheelchair Association annual Church gate collection will be taken up in Ardagh/Carrigkerry on Saturday 24^th/ and Sunday25th August. People are asked to be as generous as possible with their donations.

On Sunday 25^th August from 1pm to 6pm an Autumn Fair will be held on the grounds of the Desmond Complex Newcastle West. Attractions on the day will include stalls, music, games for children, and a draw for valuable prizes. The Fair is intended as a fundraiser but it will also provide information to the people of the local area, on the facilities available there for various groups of people from far and wide to avail of. The annual Relig Mhuire Cemetery Askeaton Mass will be celebrated on Sunday 25^th August at 3pm. The people who have graves there are asked to attend to them beforehand in preparation for the Mass.

The annual Milford Hospice Fair is fixed for Sunday 1^st September at the UL Arena in the UL Campus. Milford Care Centre is a 10 minute walk away from there. The organizers would appreciate your support for this most deserving cause.
