The death has taken place of Dick Woulfe Dunganville, Ardagh. at University Hospital Limerick on Wednesday 7^thAugust. Husband of the late Mary (nee Cahill) and brother of the late Noreen, he was a retired farmer and he was 83 years old. He was one of five in family and they were known as the Cratloe Woulfe’s as they came from Athea, to distinguish them from the other Woulfe families in the area. He was known as a hard working and progressive farmer who cared for his Church and community. Dick grew up in Dunganville, and his passions and interests in life was family, farming, Church, community and politics. Dick married Mary Cahill from Newcastle West in 1959 and they were blessed with five sons who all have done well for themselves. They build up and extended the farm, with determination and hard work and they were good and obliging neighbours. The Rosary was recited nightly and country traditions and values observed.  Dick was a regular Mass attender, and he took up the weekly basket collection for 30 years. He was a member of the original Ardagh Hall Committee whose fundraising helped to upgrade parish premises. He was a member of the Pioneer Association, and also a member of the Fine Gael Party.  He enjoyed his social trips to Dairygold Co-op, marts, and other farming events, and a game of cards in Ardagh Hall.

He lay in repose at Reidy’s Funeral Home, Newcastle West on Friday 9^th August from 5pm, followed by removal to Saint Molua’s Church, Ardagh. Fr Larry Madden led 12 of his fellow priests in concelebrating his Requiem Mass on Saturday morning from 11.30am. Symbols associated with his life, family photo,  Dunganville home and farm photo, Rosary beads, 50 year Pioneer Certificate, walking stick and cap were taken to the Altar before Mass commenced. His 17 grandchildren participated in the Ceremony which was a celebration of his life. Fr Madden paid him a lovely tribute during his homily and son Jim, on behalf of the family, also spoke in tribute. The Church was packed for the Mass, and large crowds also attended to pay their respects on the previous night. The burial took place in the adjoining cemetery on Saturday 10^th August. We extend our sympathy to his sons Jim, Liam, Michael, Richard and David, brother Liam, sisters Margaret and Kathleen Kenny, daughters- in- law Ann, Marguerite, Mary, Bernie and Mary, grandchildren, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, relatives, his carers, neighbours, and wide circle of friends. May he rest in Peace.

We extend our sympathy to Denis Crowley and Mary Ita Keane and their families Grouse Lodge, Ardagh, on the death of their mother Kathleen Crowley (nee O’Sullivan) Dromtrasna Collins, Abbeyfeale. She laid in repose at Harnett’s Funeral Home, Abbeyfeale, on Thursday from 5pm, followed by removal to the Church of the Assumption, Abbeyfeale. The Requiem Mass was on Friday 9^th August at 11am followed by burial in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Abbeyfeale. We extend sympathy also to her family, relatives and friends. May she rest in Peace.

Saint Kieran’s defeated Mungret /Saint Pauls by 0-17 to 2-10 in Group 2 of the County Intermediate Hurling League.

Saint Kieran’s lost to Feenagh/Kilmeedy by 1-12 to 1-9 in the West Junior B Hurling Championship play-off in Knockaderry on Friday 2^nd August.

Saint Kieran’s/Sean Finns lost to Newcastle West by 4-13 to 0-4 in Round 3 of the County Premier Minor Football Championship in Newcastle West on Tuesday 30^th July.

Saint Kieran’s were defeated by Dromin/Athlacca by 2-8 to 0-11 in Round 3 of the County Intermediate Hurling Championship at Ballingarry Gaelic Grounds, on Saturday 3^rd August. It was a tight and close contest all through with the side’s level at half-time 1-4 to 0-7. A second goal in the final quarter edged the contest for Dromin /Athlacca, who progress to the quarter finals.  A match that could have been drawn or won if they had a little extra scoring power in attack. The loss of 5 key players from last year’s panel has hampered the team’s progress this season. Saint Kieran’s will play Claughaun in the semi-final of the County Cup. The Carrigkerry Playground Committee held a very successful bag packing fundraiser at Tesco in Newcastle West on Friday 2^nd August. The Committee would like to thank the management and staff of Tesco, and all the volunteers who helped with the bag packing. A special thanks to all the customers who contributed to the fundraiser.

The Grow community mental health movement meets each Thursday evening at 8pm in the ‘Station Room’ in the Desmond Complex Newcastle West. People who may be suffering from anxiety depression, isolation, loneliness, shyness, or who may find it difficult to talk are most welcome to attend. The movement offers support and friendship to people and no introductions are necessary.

Shanagolden Summer Festival takes place from Thursday 15th to Sunday 18^th August. A full and exciting programme has been put in place which should suit all ages and tastes. The proceeds from the festival will go towards the development of the Captain Tim Madigan Park in the village.

Mass will be celebrated at Borrigone Holy Well on Thursday 15^th August at 3pm. All are welcome to attend and do the rounds and to collect water from the blessed well as people did in times past.    It is an aged old tradition in the area and long may it continue.
